    Is it possible to swap a b8 s4 engine into a b8 a4????

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been really thinking into swapping these two ever since this engine is taking a lot of oil and Audi won't fix it. Any input guys???

It's been done, but it's rather expensive. You may want to look into a b8.5 engine instead..

Not worth getting a s4 engine; try another turbo engine

This. Also, not sure how strict your state is on emissions regulations but I was turned down by a local shop to do a manual conversion on my Avant a while back simply because they weren't too confident they could get all of the electronics to work together to pass emissions testing in CA.

$6-7k for s4 engine. Probably 100+ hrs labor for engine install, harnesses and electronics.

Ya.. I didn't want to mention the wiring harness from front to back.. Lol..

Ecu / mmi / Engine Bay.. You're better off buying a s4 at that point unless you've got the skills to do it yourself... Or a shop who's interested in the challenge or the glory of being "the first".

In fact, the first one if I recall was an black a4 avant.

I know right. Its a shame Audi didn't bring a manual Avant or S4 Avant at all. Like others have said though, a B8.5 E85 compatible motor would be a decent upgrade. It'll cost much less overall, including whatever seals, sensors and whatever else is needed to have it run E85.

I was considering selling this car but if somehow I can pull that off I've got no problems keeping it. GL on your swap, whichever route you go. If you've got that much expendable money then go for the S4 swap with a manual trans 🤤

For an S4 engine, I would look at LKQ only. I see one for $5500. 2-4K gets you 2.0 engines.

Sure, but a K04/F23L A4 motor would give you a faster car and be easier and cheaper.

I'm usually all for crazy projects, but in this case I'd probably just get an S4 if you want an S4 motor since there really are zero tangible benefits from doing a swap over just buying one. Buying an S4 will be cheaper in the end and you'll have all the other goodies that come with one, like the DSG, interior, suspension, sports diff, etc.

A faster car? I doubt it, besides you can always stage 2 the s4, don't forget that

Stock S4s are low 13 second cars. 13 flat in good weather. I've raced a few at the track, some even with intake/exhaust on the stock tune. All DSGs cutting 1.7 second 60' times. Never seen one get into the 12s. Stage 2 of course is another animal.

Intake and exhaust on these engines have absolutely no effect on performance, mainly just sound purposes unlike with turbo engines. But these 3.0 engines are heavily detuned, even going stage 1 which is like 800 bucks is a no brained and all you need is a laptop and a mongoose cable

Agreed, especially if you can find a certificate of destruction title so you get it even cheaper, take what you need, which will be more than just a long block, and then part out the rest and it will cost you less in the long run

There's also s guy in the s4 section parting out a whole car that had around 40k on it, so that's also an alternative

Unless you plan to do all labor yourself, it will be cheaper/easier to sell your A4 and buy an S4. Also, if you're going to do this work, I'd build a car that you can't have in the US - namely a B8 S4 Avant. Buy a used A4 Avant and swap the S4 drivetrain into it. S4 sedans are not unique.

I looked into this before and it's not worth it. The amount of wire looms and getting the car to talk to the new system would be a bitch unless you gut the entire things and basically in-planet the entire S4 into the A4.

    Get an S4

    or

Get an E85 engine and figure out how to convert your car now to function with E85. I'd like to know for down the road when I build a new motor.

Reason why the new b9 s4 will be zf8 only... Much better torque capacity!... Audi will soon be going away from using dsgs anymore.... Yes there have been reliable tuned s4s running well... But many failures as well

Yeah the new dsg in the b9 is fwd based as compared to the older one in the s4s.. kinda stinks... There is no way it'll stand up the the high torque of the new s4 turbo motor...
