Oil Not Heating Up to Operating Temperature

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

Today I noticed that my engine oil temperature doesn't get above 185 degrees no matter how hard or how long I drive it. Usually it will get up to 220 within about 15 minutes of normal driving, even when it's freezing cold outside.

Today's outside temperature was a relatively balmy mid 40s, so I don't think that was the issue. The coolant temp gauge is right down the middle as normal.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Well for one, when the oil doesn't get to operating temperature, it's not at its optimal viscosity. And two, this us not normal--it has never happened before.

My oil temp is typically above 200, around 210. After some hard beating it can get up to 230-240. From my other friends with B8s its the same for them. 185 is not normal.

You're completely right. These cars have a high operating temp to try and combat carbon buildup in the valves, 185 is not normal. Im not sure that this would be a thermostat issue, I'm almost positive these tstats fail closed not open. I believe the oil pressure sensor also doubles as the temp sensor, maybe start there?

Me too, and with extended highway drives I see 220-230. I've seen as high as 260 on the track.

Have you recently had the ECU/Cat recall done? I've heard of some instances where people are getting some odd readings after the service

No, I haven't had any work done recently besides regular maintenance. But this morning my car seems to be back to normal... operating temperature back to around 210-220. *shrug*

Yesterday I took it out for a drive four times and each drive lasted more than 20 minutes and it wouldn't get above 185. I didn't do drag runs, but I drove it pretty hard. In fact, every time I go easy on the gas it would dip a few degrees down to 170s before getting back up to 180s again once I step on it.

Hopefully this issue is a weird anomaly and doesn't come back!

Takes mine more than 15 min to get to 200 during the winter. If you're just around town on side streets could take much longer. Sometimes in real cold weather if it's been sitting outside it can take 30 min.

Now it's doing it again... and this time the coolant gauge is also showing low temperature. The coolant gauge is bouncing between 1/4 of the way up to halfway.

I'm gonna try replacing the coolant sensor.

So it was indeed the coolant temperature sensor. I replaced that and everything's back to normal!

Glad you had this sorted out !

I would be curious to know the exact formula of the calculated oil temp.
(indeed coolant temp is one of the parameters, since a coolant sensor fixed the issue)

I stole this picture from the net... but it's part #3 shown below. All I had to do was unplug the wire assembly and pull the plastic clip holding it in place. New part comes with a new clip.

Yeah, I'm curious also. Can the cooling system actually cool oil temperature by that much? Or was the oil temperature reading inaccurate because of a coolant sensor error?

My return coolant line just blew itself out and of course 0 coolant = no reading. Secondly, I watched oil temperature and it seemed lower than normal. Possibly because all the coolant that came out was affecting the sensor. Eventually, I also saw an error for the oil level sensor.
