So I'm working on getting a little farther on my rear calipers. They're completely disassembled now.

Safe to say they needed to be rebuilt.
Bringing the crank to my uncles shop right now to clean and mic it. If everything checks out I'll send it to a local shop to get it knife edged and balanced with the pistons and rods. Rods will be ordered within the next month.

After micing the crank found out that the mains are under by .001 and the rods are under .0015 so I'll probably have to run oversized bearings. I'll have to look more into it. If anyone wants to chime in.

Scraped out all the o ring surfaces so I can start rebuilding my calipers.

Honed out the caliper to remove corrosion, and rough surfaces.

And got the first coat of primer on them. Ready for paint.

I would plasti gauge to confirm. Skeptical all tolerances are off. I have some brand new rod bearings laying around I can send you for testing. They are the cheaper lower end Meyle, though. Can't help you with main bearings.

I have some main bearings laying around my house I guess I could use. Did all the measuring at my uncles machine shop with info I got from the service department at Audi

Just find it hard to accept all tolerances to be off. I do not accept coincidences or accidents...and this situation is beyond both with all clearances off the way they are. Plasti gauge to confirm. Won't be the first time Audi goofed. Willing to bet it passes the plasti gauge test.

Figured it's about time I post

I definitely will...just to be sure but after getting this info and taking actual measurements of my crank...but who knows how precise these cranks are to what they're supposed to be measured at. I'll plastigauge it next weekend (since it's at my father's house an hour away) and see what the clearances are on the mains. I'm still going to have it knife edged so it will be at a machine shop regardless. Thanks for the input.

No problem! Seen your post in the 1.8t tech section, but I'm the guy (a few other b5 guys too) who usually answers questions in that section. Figure post input in your build thread than over there.

I appreciate it, man. I'll have to wait until i can buy my rods. I'm leaning towards scat, but I'm undecided if i want to get integrated engineering ones...I guess I'll buy those before I buy my cams.

If you know anyone selling some IE or Scat rods. let me know, I'm definitely in the market.

    rod brands dont really matter.
Most people who have bought eagle rods dont have issues.
    Nothing wrong with scat.
I ran IE but thats just because i got a deal.
Any thoughts about going stroker? Id recommend it with that big holeset.

it isnt that much more work (just the boring and IM shaft machinig)...which idk if you have to do with the IE rods...i could be wrong.

great to see another Massachusetts build!

I've thought about it honestly, but I kind of wanted to keep it a 1.8 I don't know why..just something says keep it a 1.8
I'll probably buy the scat rods because I've seen good things about them, and they're only 400, but it's been slow at work so when it gets busy again I can justify buying them. Probably next month. Then I'll plastigauge all rod, and main bearing surfaces, just to make sure everything is ok.

Kind of just rolling with it, but i've been talking to some guys, and judging the power kind of off that....Hoping to get 450whp after the head build, and the meth. I know its hard to achieve, but again..I never expected to be this far into my build...Bought the car, and was just expecting to daily it. Then I had the idea to buy an Aeb, not split it open, and run a t3t4...440cc tune and just have a fun car, then this happened lol. So I'm willing to spend the time<and money to get to that goal. Keep in mind, this is my first engine build, so I'm doing this to expand my knowledge, learn and have some fun. I think thats why I'm going so far with it. Just to say I have, and familirize myself. Plus I've met a few guys who I'm glad I've met, and are super willing to help with any annoying questions i have.

Not to throw jabs at anyone but I have found "power mod" guys are a LOT more down to earth and helpful when you need it vs. the asthetic mod guys.

    450whp is pretty burly though!

Yeah I've noticed that too, after being a part of the "stance scene" for almost a decade. Nobody wants to help, or share experiences like offset, and shit. But again you have a lot of idiots who don't want to do research, and want everything handed to them...so I guess it goes either way. But when I have questions, or concerns here it seems I have a handful of people who are happy to lend a hand...It's a nice change lol.

Do you have access to E85?? Amazing fuel. It's unreal its capabilities, if you do have it local to you, i'd suggest going that route. With the shitty pump 91 (highest pump octane available to me), I was only able to get about 5psi on my HX35 before it started knocking like a bitch. Switched to E85 and hit over 30psi that same day. Meth will certainly help, but the fuel accounts for a lot.

I'll probably end up tuning it on 93 and meth just out of convenience. Sounds like your timing was a little off for the ethanol content of running just 91.

Very well could be. Using Maestro 7, haven't touched the timing settings at all, don't know what's "safe" and what's not!! I've seen plenty of good results on 93, i'm excited to see what you end up putting down!

Pulled the head apart. Bringing it to work on Monday to throw in the parts washer for the day. Hopefully pulling the valves out this week. Port and polish coming soon.

Figured it's about time I post

I've been cleaning the head in the parts washer at work since 9:30. This is what it looked like prior to any cleaning.

After a few hours of annoying humming from the parts washer, and a little bit of scrubbing with a mild scuff pad, this is what she looks like now.

I'll be running it for the rest of the day (until 5:00) and see where that leaves me. Hoping to have some free time this Wednesday after work to pull the valves, springs, and retainers.
Just picked up some IE valve seals while I'm in there. Replacing the exhaust valves with the Ferrea valves, and the springs and retainers with the IE set.

Pulled all the valves/springs/retainers out today at work. Got the valve seals out on the exhaust side. Have to buy a special narrow tool to pull the intake side seals. If anyone has any experience with that...

Walked over to audi to grab the valve seal puller for the intake valves. We managed to pull the exhaust side using some angled pliers, but didnt even try on the tighter intake side. Should've just used that from the beginning.

I used long needle nose pliers to get mine out. I plan on picking up a cheap generic tool to place new ones on, though. Want them seated properly and not quite sure I have the skills to pull it off with pliers.

I posted in the bullsh*t thread the part number for the pullers..I'll find out the one for the installer, and post it later in there too. The guys at my Audi store are really helpful, they let me use theirs, and offered me the installer, but it needs to get ported and polished first. I pulled all the exhaust ones with pliers, but it was a huge pain in the ass. Took the 12 intake ones out in about 10 minutes with the right tool.

Because I got to use the Audi one for free. I work at Lexus for the same company and they're in the same lot. Plus it's a cool slide hammer that makes it way easier.

Thanks! I'm glad someone is enjoying it. I'm really excited to put something back together for once lol. There's so much going on that I can't really focus on one thing. Building the head, the bottom end, doing a whole drivetrain swap, fixing the exterior, interior work, brakes, new suspension, doing all new mounts. Just redoing everything. It's a little overwhelming, but I'll get there eventually.
