    Removing Window Trim

    Hey guys,

I have an ibis white A4 and I would like to have the window trim wrapped black.

Has anyone done this? Tips and tricks?

    Thanks

    T

I had my window trim and grill surround wrapped black for $300. When I priced out materials the price difference wasn't worth the stress of doing it myself and putting a razor blade near my paint.

They didn't remove trim to apply the wrap, just cut it a little wider than the trim piece and trim it off after it was applied.

lol this is what I am hearing, but I am really not a fan of chrome trim so I really want to try to black it out with some vinyl. Did you take yours off the car?

No I did it on the car. I'm not entirely sure you CAN take all the trim out. I recall reading somewhere that the wear quarter glass has to come out with the trim. Not sure if that's 100% accurate though.

I feel like this is true. I plastidipped mine a couple times. Probably will do it again this spring. Takes a couple hours, some newspaper and some tape.

Just wanted to update this thread with my experience on this. I attempted plasti dipping my trim this past weekend. After masking everything off and applying 4 coats of plastidip I waited about an hour to start peeling the tape and paper off; for the most part it looked great, except for the parts where the dip caught some of the tape and came off with it, revealing chrome =[. Long story short I decided not to go this route because I didn't realize that the chrome trim goes well behind the door, so when you open the door you still see chrome and IMO looks like crap. I don't feel like taping everything off again especially with a plastic dropcloth for the door openings.

Going to try the vinyl method sometime next week. will update when I do.

I think you can take them off the car. I've had it on my to-do list for a while just need a week of nice weather as I don't want to drive in the rain without them.

Here is the first half of the DIY I was writing for it:
Originally I was going to have mine vinyl wrapped until I came across a guy who painted his which IMO is a better solution.

When I previously did research everyone kept saying you had to break the back small window and disassemble the doors to remove the trim to paint it. I can now confirm neither is needed.

With that, here is some preliminary research. I might post a proper DIY when I do mine if I get enough interest here.

    Removing Body Window Trim

    1. Roof Trim Molding
    􀁺 Standard roof trim molding:
-- Remove the roof trim molding from the body beginning at the C-pillar.
􀁺 High gloss roof trim strip:
-- Pull the lower trim strip out the clips beginning on the side of the C-pillar.
-- Carefully pry the roof trim strip out of the clips above the side window and unclip it from the body flange.
-- Beginning at the A-pillar, unclip the roof trim strip from the body moving downward.
    2. Side Window
    3. Decorative Trim Strip
-- To remove the C-pillar, pry it out of the clips beginning at the side.
-- Pry the roof trim molding on the roof out of the side clips.
-- Slide the trim molding down out of the roof trim molding.

    Removing Door Window Trim
Haven't tested it myself though so cannot confirm.

Hmmm, from the diagram I guess it is just pulling and prying... going to need a lot of patience as to not break anything. Thanks for the help thus far

Talking to one of the Audi techs you can use like a plastic wedge to pop off the door trim. Those are the hardest part and I haven't confirmed it works yet. (Thus half complete DIY)

Keep us updated whiped, followed your CF thread and got those in, now I need to open my headlights and clean them up and paint the inside gloss black, and the window trim as well.

The body trim is really easy to take off, abit scary sound when the clips pops :) Around the quarterpanel window pretty much just pull it straight out.

The door trim you can take of by taking a one of those plastic trimremoval tools and take a hammer and dig underneath the trim and smack it upp with a hammer. Work from one end to the other in small steps.(this CAN damage the trim) The correct way is to strip down the whole door.
