Will do! Thanks. I'm going to google the relay layout and check all my fuses. The wiper jets don't work either which is strange. The fluid is full. I pull the lever towards me to activate them and nothing happens

The only electrical part of the washer system is the pump. So either the pump isn't working or the jets are blocked somehow. The first thing I did when I bought my B5 was put a new washer pump and jets in and it squirts beautifully now!

Nice thread and I hope you get the B5 sorted out, seems like you've had a ton of bad luck. Do you have a B7 thread?

Hm. It doesn't sound like the jets are even engaging at all. By that I mean it doesn't even make the hum like they want to turn on. Where is the pump? I'll try checking that. Maybe I crimped a line when I put the bumper back on?-

Idk if it's bad luck or not I think I just bought a really neglected car lol. Link below! It covers both of my B7's. First like 6-7 pages are my black car before I parted it out and sold it and the rest are my maroon car from the day I bought it to now!

If you don't hear the humming then the pump probably isn't kicking on. The pump is easily reached through the driver side wheel well. Remove the wheel and pull back the wheel liner and you'll see the washer reservoir and pump right there. Not to be confused with the pump for the headlight washers which is on the engine side of the reservoir. The pump for the windshield has two hoses that come out of it.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what/if I find anything. I'm thinking maybe it's just unplugged? Possibly...

Anyway, no luck online finding the relay for the SAI pump and it's still kicking on as soon as I plug it in, motor on or off. Meh

Spent the day installing the new suspension. Tien springs on eibach struts. Bad news is the car is tucking tire on the passengers side, while on the drivers side there's at least a finger of gap left. I feel like that is related to the steering issue. Not sure how though. I'm going to bring the car to my friends shop for when I go away next week and hopefully he can fix it once and for all

These are the two sides by comparison. I'm not sure what could be broken within the suspension that would lower the car and that would cause a steering issue but I'm pretty positive that the issues are related since the turning clunk is coming from the passengers front side

Did the car sit like that before you swapped out the suspension?

I don't recall. Maybe? Not sure but I might just get rid of the tiens and go to a different OEM setup I bought if this is going to be a problem

I dug up some info for you on the SAI. It's a fairly simple circuit. Basically the ECU controls what appears to be a double throw relay. When the ECU wants SAI on, it closes the relay, when it wants SAI off, it opens the relay. I would find the relay and test its operation, as it might be stuck closed. My 2000 V6 passat wiring diagram refers to this relay at 'J299' and indicates its located in the air plenum fuse box near the ECU on the drivers side. I think the A4 and the passat are pretty similar in this aspect of the layout. Pull up the ECU lid and you should be able to find it in there. The relay has a 40A fuse inline prior connected to terminal T8/8 of the relay.

If its not the relay thats gone bad check the wiring from the ECU to the relay. The wiring diagram makes it look like the relay is closed with no power applied by the ECU. If the signal line from the ECU is broken, it might keep the pump on all the time.

Yeah, thats weird, although hard to tell if its the new components or not if you can't remember if it was always like that. hehe.

How did the control arms look when you had the suspension out?

Thanks for the info! I had opened the ecu box and only saw one relay in there, I don't recall if it was J299 but I will have to look again.

Yeah, it would help if I looked into it before lol... The control arms didn't look too bad. The passengers wheel had some left/right play but nothing major. The bushings didn't look too worn. I'm bringing the car to my friends shop while I'm on vacation. Getting tired of spending all of my free time on it. I want it to just drive properly so I can start ripping parts off the B7! That's the fun project lol

Haven't had any time to look at the b5. I took it for a drive a little bit ago and both sides are rubbing pretty bad. I'm running a 235/45/17 right now, that probably has something to do with it, but the car definitely is sitting much lower than I expected springs to sit. A friend of mine sold me OEM suspension for cheap so I may just sell the tien/eibach combo

    Update on the car:

So it went to the shop. I decided I'm just going to go back on to the stock suspension and then sell the tien/eibach combo.

I also got an update on the steering issue. My friend thinks it's the differential in the transmission that went bad. He flushed the transmission and put new fluid in, he said that it was low. All in all, he said I most likely will need a new transmission.

Any other ideas before I just accept the extreme? The symptoms are when you cut the wheel and get close to full lock, the car slows down and/or stops. When you accelerate through the turn, the car feels like it's hopping, and more throttle than normal needs to be applied

    Any input would be appreciated

Still convinced we're the same person my transmission story is the same thing. It leaks fluid, it sounds like crap, and if I accelerate while turning the wheel at low speeds you can just hear the diff binding (or hopping is another way to put it). I think my problem is that mine's a 98 so those were pre-Torsten center diffs which were just trash. Pieces break off the diff and pollute the transmission fluid and it's killed my whole transmission. Also check you rear diff too, mine has two good size leaks. I've been topping up my transmission and diff fluids once a month and it always sounds better after I've topped off the fluid. The 5-speeds in these cars were just a mistake. I know people that have 1.8s that are running stage 3 power and they go through 5-speeds like oil changes. This guy said he just kept swapping in another 5 speed and had like 4 broken ones sitting in his garage . I honestly think the permanent solution is an 01E 6-speed drivetrain swap.

Yeah maybe we're the same person

This is a 5 speed auto and it shifts like butter I didn't think the trans was bad when I drove it. The car feels powerful too... meh this sucks. May just sell it for what I have into it ($2000 at this point) and shop for another one. This is going to have to happen after the b7 gets its heart transplant though

Everything I've done is in here and it all goes in vein because I refuse to do a trans swap on this, because I don't want to pay to have it done. It's pre facelift too which is also a big deterrent for me.

Hopping/binding while you have a steering input in could be a sign of worn suspension components or bad CV joints. Might even be a wheel bearing.

Are the CV boots on the passenger side intact?

Even if it is a diff issue, you'll have to ask yourself if the symptoms make it un-drivable. If you don't mind the clunking and annoying behavior close to full lock, just drive the thing into the ground before deciding what to do with it. It could still have some good life to give.

The suspension rides nice but I hate the way the car is raked and I also just don't want to deal with 2 low cars. One is enough for me lol. Maybe one day with further disposable income I can build me a nice b5 (facelifted) daily

My buddy inspected everything and said the suspension looked solid. I do think the inner pass cv is ripped, can't recall though. None of the wheel bearings sound worn. The alignment isn't off either because I had it checked prior to changing the suspension and the shop said it wasn't necessary to do but would have to be done post-suspension swap (normal)

That's not a bad option either. This car definitely has lots of good life in it and it's very clean on the outside, doesn't have any real surface rust on the bottom either which is nice. Ideally I just want a car that's not begging daily to be fixed you know?

    Update:

Both outer CV boots are ripped, inners are not (from what I could tell)

I took out the front suspension in a whopping 30 minutes and then couldn't get the OEM springs to compress properly. I honestly thought the spring compressors were going to kill me so I brought the fronts to a local shop to just be assembled.

Also, pretty sure my b7's 2.0t finally locked up for good on me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well that would explain the clunking for shuurree. Get them rebuilt, or go to a solid re manufacturer like raxles. Cheap ebay or chineese axles will just give you trouble.

    Whats with the b7?

But does it explain the car coming to a stop close to full lock?

Also I was backing up, went to pull up my driveway and stalled. Tried starting the car, it does one click and then doesn't turn. Tried jumping it, nothing. Tried tapping the starter with a hammer, nothing. Tried pop starting in second, third, fourth and fifth gears and the car came to a complete stop almost instantly

It might if one of the joints is binding. Although i don't fully understand what you are describing when you say 'comes to a stop'

Sucks about the b7. Sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging?

I'll have to take a video for you of what the b5 is doing

And regardless what it is I'm just going to send it to the shop for the motor swap

    Update to my last post:

the cam shafts seized up in the top end and there were 3 large metal bits in the head of the motor. Oh well, it's been at the shop for the last 4 months awaiting the motor swap. Hopefully it's done soon, check my B7 progression thread for updates on that if you're curious!

    New post:

So I believe the torque converter shit out on the car, and I was in a pinch for a new car since my b7 is still dead (and was at the time of the b5's death)... so I did what any normal person would do... took out a loan and bought a car that (wouldn't) die on them.

    Here it is: 2008 8P Audi A3 - 3.2L VR6 Quattro w/ DSG

(On the snows because I got a flat)

Anyway I love the car, and I can tolerate the DSG because of the beautiful sounds of a VR6.

    Back to B5 content...

So with this car being dead (and I wish I could post a video but I don't know how) I decided to do a full part out. I figured it would help me learn a lot since I don't have to be too careful and can take some risks with things I don't know how to do.

    Photo dump pre part out

Some progress from yesterday. My buddy kyle came over and we took apart most of the front and some of the interior. This definitely will be a fun learning experience!

That b7's my buddy hank's old car. Fun fact of the day. I found that paint code for him when his car was black and wanted to paint it red so....you're welcome lol.
    I daily drive a 2010 A3 8P black on black but 2.0t and facelift, and have a b5 project lol. #samebutdifferent

Hank is a cool dude, and I'm glad this one didn't have too too much done to it, so I was able to take his progress and send it over the top to my own build. And thank you, the color is so perfect on this car!!

I just really didn't want a 2.0t since the b7 was 2.0t and failed me, and I wanted another N/A car to replace the B5. I just like the idea of a N/A daily. That, and VR6 is unbeatable. I had a VR6 Jetta a couple years back and loved it. The only thing I'm upset about is that 6 speed wasn't an option for the A3 with a 3.2

That's a wrap on this project, head over to the classifieds if you need any parts!

I can safely say that I'm happy I bought this car, it actually taught me a lot, and I hope it translates well to when I get my B7 back with the 2.7T in it, being similar to this 2.8. Peep that thread for ongoing progress and photos! If all goes according to plan, that should be up and running in the next few days!

See ya later B5 forums, it was fun for now... until I inevitably own another one

Sad to see it go man!

I'm in the same boat though. Got the passat back up and running, and want to move on to other things. I'll probably sell the car whole tho, instead of parting out ;)

What happened to the rear quarter? I guess I missed that at some point?
