I just can't get on board with the orange lol

Update: starting to look like something. I snapped the smallest bolt on the middle pulley on the far right so I drilled the hole to get the head out. Now I can't find a replacement but I don't know how necessary it is, there's still the 3 6mm bolts holding it down. Thoughts? I can't find a bolt to match it anywhere

I'm pretty sure those two bolts inside the fan clutch pulley come with the pulley. You could maybe get a bolt at a hardware store. When I did the timing belt on my friend's ghetto ass 2.8 both his bolts behind the pulley were broken and I just bolted it back on with only the two bolts (that are kind of close to each other) and it's been fine for 5,000 or so miles.

Okay I have 3 of the 4, I'll take my chances. I couldn't find any bolts that size in any stores near me / those places were closed. Just trying to get this thing done!

It should be fine, I'd put it back as is. Your other option would be to just junkyard a whole fan clutch pulley with good bolts.

Progress for the day. I'm struggling to get the upper radiator hose to clip on, unsure why. The u clamp won't push down and clip in. It's always the dumbest things that are complicated

Almost done! Reminds me I need a new AC condenser. Did you spray the coolant hose connections with silicone spray?

Lubricate the inside of the hose with oil. Had to do this with mine.

It's to lubricate and it's safe to use on cooling system components.

The car fired right up on the first try! What I sigh of relief that I didn't mess anything up...

Now I need to figure out the power steering. When the car turns fully it basically stops and if you accelerate through the turn the car seems like it's going to stall out. The rpms dip super low and then shoot back up when you stop turning the wheel. Any thoughts on this? No leaks in the power steering system from what I can tell, but this blue ball thing (nooooo clue what it is) isn't hooked up to anything and I noticed some vac leaks too. Are the two issues related? My vacuum reservoir (blue snowman) was missing the first month I owned mine and I didn't notice any difference when I got a new one and connected the vacuum hoses. For the power steering I would assume there's more resistance on the pulley when you turn the wheel and it bogs the engine down. Maybe the fluid needs to be flushed? Usually if the pump's bad it makes an awful grinding sound so I don't think that's it. How does the steering fluid look?

Looks pretty dark but I thought that was normal, how would I flush that system?

Also I forgot to mention in that last post:

The brakes feel very very soft, not sure how to make the pedal stiffer. All the pads/rotors were just changed by me not long ago.

Also, the coolant and oil temperature gauges still don't work after changing the sensors. Any thoughts?

Update: all gauges work, not sure why they weren't before but the car was running for like 10 minutes and they never budged.

Radio is in safe mode also, guess I'll try pulling the fuse for it and going from there

Power steering fluid should look green. To flush the system you get the front of the car up in the air so the wheels can turn easily with the motor off. Remove the return hose to the reservoir (the smaller of the two hoses that connect to the bottom of the power steering reservoir. The smaller hose is towards the back of the car in reference to the other hose). Plug the reservoir so it doesn't drain out and put the return hose into a bottle or bucket. Then have a friend turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you slowly pour the new fluid into the reservoir. You'll be able to see the old fluid come out the return hose and into the bottle or whatever you use to catch it. Keep turning the wheel back and forth until the fluid looks cleaner. 1 liter of power steering fluid should do it, but if you really want to make sure it's all flushed out and brand new get 2 liters. And make sure it's genuine Audi fluid or CH11S. And the brakes might need a bleed too if they feel soft.

Do you think the flush will fix the problem? And how would you plug the reservoir?

Depends on how bad the fluid is right now. Flushing the power steering fluid is good to do every once in a while anyway. And to plug the reservoir I wrap a golf tee with some masking tape and shove it in there.

    Congrats!

Yep, as mentioned previously, that blue thing is you vacuum reservoir. Its there to provide additional vacuum to the intake changeover valve under long duration wide open throttle operation. Hook it up to the line you have in your hand up by the vacuum plate. Might be a good idea to get some silicone hose off amazon and redo all of them. They are probably more than past gone at this point.

Edit: Wait a sec, is that vacuum line on your fuel pressure reg not hooked up?

You're going to have to circle the things you're referencing in the photos because I'm so beyond not mechanically inclined lol. And I'm not sure where he hose from the blue vac reservoir goes. But, it's covered in residue from what I think is power steering fluid

Not sure if this is normal, it's under 30 degrees here. If I click the AC button the snowflake pops up on the climate control display and then immediately turns off. Did I mess the AC up, or is this normal? If I did, how would I go about fixing it?

    Haaa.

There should be a vacuum routing diagram somewhere under the hood. If you can't find it, a quick google image search will probably yield what you are looking for.

The original cloth covered lines suck. PS fluid will only exacerbate their deterioration.

Yeah I'm throwing a code for secondary air flow (p0441 or 04411). So I was going to redo the vacuum lines. I need to get the car to pass emissions

Post 59 in my blog post has shots when i re plumbed my vacuum plate. That should help a bit. I think i have a few photos in there of the proper routing to the fuel pressure regulator. (The small silver 'can' attached to the fuel rail)

Vac leaks are a definite possibility for the code you are throwing. Both SAI valves on the back of bank 1 and 2 are vacuum actuated from the vacuum plate.

    Make Daily's Great Again!

    So I'm a little stumped.

The other morning my secondary air pump turned on and wouldn't shut off. It was unplugged when I bought the car and now I know why. It never shut off and my battery died. So I bought a used pump from someone local and plugged it in with the car on and with the car off. It turned on instantly both times, as did the pump currently installed on my car.

Any ideas on what this could be? He said he would take the pump back if I end up not needing it so that's good.... but I don't know what else to blame. It's especially weird that it's turning on with the motor off. I'm about to head home from his house and I plan on doing my research when I'm home

I've never heard of that problem, is there a relay for the SAI that's maybe stuck closed?

Guess I'll have to check all the fuses and find a relay diagram

A Bentley is a great investment. They pop up used from time to time in the classifieds. They'll have the wiring diagrams you need.

Your problem is an odd one. You sure its the SAI pump and not the secondary cooling pump running?

It's the pump directly under the air box on the front of the motor that you can touch and see if you remove the passenger side bumper grille. Pretty sure it's secondary air

It has plastic piping attached that runs up in front of the engine and attaches to the SAI pipe that ducks under the intake mani?

Yeppers! Very weird. I'll be out in the garage this weekend. Let me know if you can't find a wiring diagram. I can look at the passat schematic. It might lend some general help.
