If I buy a HEX-V2 directly from Ross-Tech, then I don't need to register it because it's already in their customer records and I'm immediately eligible for tech support.

How does registration with Ross-Tech work when I buy a VCDS from you? Is it automatic or do I need to do something on the R-T website?

If you purchase it from us it makes no difference... you have to register the product either way.

That's true, but it doesn't really answer my question.

According to R-T, if I buy directly from them, registration is automatic: they already have my name, address, and serial # of the VCDS, and I don't have to do anything further with regards to registration.

But if I buy from a distributor like Europa, is the buyer information forwarded to R-T and processed, or do I need to take further steps to ensure that my VCDS gets registered?

I'm pretty sure that's all done as you setup the cable... all the old Ross Techs came in a sealed envelope so I'm pretty sure there was no way for them to automatically register them since they're sealed.

OK, thanks. I just ordered a HEX-V2 from Europa, so I guess I'll find out about registration when it gets here.

The free shipping brought me in. :)

If you own an Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, or Bentley you need a powerful tool that will help keep your vehicle on the road. Ross-Tech VCDS® (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) helps diagnose real problems instead of swapping out costly parts. With features found only on dealer level factory tools, VCDS surpasses the performance of aftermarket diagnostic tools and rivals factory tools for a fraction of the cost. Always know exactly how your vehicle is running instead of paying someone else to diagnose the problems, usually leaving you with a huge repair bill.

If you have a Hex - Can that came out prior to 2017 (completely different cable) you don't have a vin limit. 2017+ Ross Tech changed them to either 3 vin, 10 vin, or unlimited to offer different price points for customers.

At the end of the day the reason the vin limits came out was because people were renting them out for $ and that violated their t.o.s.

Hello, unfortunately free shipping only applies to the continental USA however we do ship to Hawaii on a daily basis. For shipping quotes simply add the product to your cart and it will give you shipping options from UPS, USPS, and FedEx.

There's a sticky in the Ross Tech pre-sales forum that addresses the VIN limits.

    http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthre...-Interface-FAQ

The really, really short version is that there's still a lot of stuff you can do for your friends without impacting your VIN count. It's only when you start getting into the advanced stuff like coding and adaptation that you start registering VINs.

I can say from having spent years working on Mitsubishis that it's a tragedy that we didn't have a tool that was 1/10th as capable and well supported as VCDS. It's even more of a shame because Mitsubishis are far more simple and 'hackable'. I bought a Hex-Net for almost $400 when I bought my S5, and I don't regret it. $200 is a steal for a tool like this, even with the VIN limits.

If you're going to own a car this complex, you need one of these tools. Even if you never turn a wrench, you can potentially save thousands just by using it to keep your mechanic honest.

    Vin Limited Interface FAQ...

    Why sell VIN-Limited interfaces?

Because it allows us to charge for the product in a manner that's somewhat commensurate with how the product is used. A professional workshop that's in and out of several vehicles a day with their VCDS gets considerably more value from the product than a private individual who only uses it occasionally one one or two of his own cars. When the previous generation of interfaces was designed 10-12 years ago, most VW/Audi cars on the road did not yet know their own VIN, so it was not really practical to restrict usage that way. Hence the pricing on our universal interfaces (interfaces that worked with all the cars available at that point) had always something of a compromise. Plenty of workshops told us that VCDS was the best value for the money of any tool they'd ever bought and that we could/should charge more, but we were already at or close to the limit of what an enthusiast would pay, and enthusiasts were (and still are!) a very important part of our business. In fact, the reason this product exists is that I got frustrated that I couldn't trouble-shoot my own cars anymore in the late 1990s. Some pros suggested that we make a less expensive version for enthusiasts by restricting the what the enthusiast version could do, but that was not an approach that was palatable to me. So now a decade later, most of the cars people are working on do know their VINs and restricting the number of cars an enthusiast can perform certain functions on seems like a reasonable way of differentiating between a "pro" and a private individual.

Will VCDS count a car's VIN as toward the license limit as soon as I plug into a particular car?

No! VCDS will never count a VIN toward the license limit without the user's explicit permission. It will always ask you first, thereby giving you the opportunity to decline to "register" a VIN in the interface. Besides, there are a lot of useful things you can do on an unlimited number of cars.

    What functions are not VIN-Restricted?

A VIN-Limited interface can do Auto-Scans, Clear DTCs, and look at Measuring Values on an unlimited number of cars. I think this is important because I wouldn't want to keep an enthusiast from doing basic diagnostics on his friends' cars, or to use his VCDS when evaluating used cars he's contemplating buying. You wouldn't buy a used car without doing an Auto-Scan on it first, right? In addition, you can make channel maps on an unlimited number of cars because sending us those maps helps us improve the product.

    What functions are VIN-Restricted?

    • In essence, it's those functions that actually change things in the car:
    • Adaptation
    • Basic Settings
    • Changing Codings
    • Changing the Gateway Installation List
    • Login or Security Access
    • Output Tests
    • Optical Bus Diagnostic
    • Readiness
    • Resetting SRI
    • Turning Transport Mode on or off

In addition, directly accessing a control module outside of an Auto-Scan will prompt the user whether he wants to "register" that car's VIN, but declining to do so at that point will not prevent access to the module.

What about older cars that do not know their VIN?

Simple: They are free. You can do anything and everything on those cars without them counting toward the license limit.

Which cars do and don't know their VIN?

Virtually all model year 2002 and newer do know their VINs -- basically those cars with Immo-3 and up. I believe the only model year 2000 car that had Immo-3 was the Audi A8, but a few others got Immo-3 in model year 2001.

If I sell one of my cars, can I de-register and free up that VIN slot?

No, it doesn't work that way. VINs are stored permanently. They cannot be erased.

Or you can just buy the Carista app and get 95% of the functionality for a tiny fraction of the price. Seriously, I don't understand why anyone spends money on the Ross Tech anymore.

Carista is a good alternative for a low cost but it will not cover what a Ross-Tech cable does. There are a few threads floating around with users experiencing issues with the Carista app which are not present with Ross-Tech. I like to compare them as buying a car with one being fully loaded while the other isn't... the fully loaded one will always cost a bit more but will include everything. Carista can be cheaper but can also run more in the long run if you want all the functions.

    Carista:

    $39.99/year or $9.99/1-week pass
    • Advanced Diagnostics
    • Customizations
    • Advanced Service

Ross-Tech $199 with no hidden fees.

There are 3 vin, 10 vin, and unlimited vin options. 3 vins start at $199.
