Thoughts about moving to S6 from American Muscle

Currently have a manual 2015 Camaro ZL1 (580hp, 560 lb-ft torque) as a DD. Have driven it 2 years, 30K miles.

Car is an amazing DD. But - filling up gas tank every 2 1/2 days (15.5 mpg), and really rethinking commuting in a manual as traffic just gets worse by the day.

Drove an S6 a week ago, and really loved the car. Most comfortable seats I've ever sat in, LOVE the diamond stitch, plenty of hp, and it just seemed like a great place to be for 10 hours a week.

Wondering if anyone else has moved into an S6 from American muscle, and if so - thoughts. Complaints with the S6? Mileage folks are getting in mix of stop and go and hwy?

Get a tune and you will be pushing more HP and torque than your Camaro and actually be able to stick it to the ground. Gas mileage will be far better. There is no comparison unless you just have to have a coupe. The S6 across the board is in a totally different class.

My car has averaged about 20 mpg overall in commuting. 25-ish on the freeway, 17-18 in stop and go. It's a great car all the way around, though you might miss the instant torque of the ZL1's motor.

I went from a 600hp 575tq manual Saleen 3 years ago to an S4 with much less power. Once I added a few things to the S4, and reached around 500hp, it felt as quick and MUCH more planted than the Saleen did (even though it was 300lbs heavier). It's amazing how much more confident the driver can feel in a proper AWD platform versus RWD american muscle. I'm now onto the S6 and will never go back to American, ever. Too much of a fan of putting all power to the ground.

And if you were impressed by a stock S6, wait till you flash a tune on it.

I went from a 2011 Charger with Super Track Pack to an A7, I do miss the power. I think you will be perfectly happy with an S6.

Assuming a SRT8 and that your A7 isn't tuned? Otherwise you wouldn't be missing the power.

Obviously you are right the A7 is quicker. . Why does it not feel as fun? I guess I miss the big v8 and exhaust.

I sense regret in almost all your posts in not taking the plunge to the S7. JUST DO IT! I know in your previous thread you pondered doing so but landed on sticking with what you have. Do you want to own a nice car knowing every time you drive it you'll be wishing the for the V8?? It's only money. It'll be worth the satisfaction!

The 2016 & newer S6/S7 model with the Sport exhaust option and a stage 1 tune sounds like a big block V8, when heavy on the throttle (into boost).

While I have not moved from American muscle I did buy a 2017 S6 in October and the car is fantastic. It's my DD with a similar one hour commute to yours - the DCT transmission is fantastic and the overall experience is very comfortable to commute in. Went with an APR Stage 1 tune for additional punch and what a difference. I get approximately 19-21 in mixed driving and up to 28 on the highway. Quattro with snow tires and it gets through anything in the winter here in the northeast. It is not the monster that the ZL-1 is but with a tune it's not too far behind.

I would bet some coin that a tuned S6 would leave a ZL-1 in the dust in a straight line drag.

never get 28 HWY...maybe I should keep it under 80. It is so smooth it does not feel like 80. Won't get that experience in an American Muscle car.

haha...this!!!! I had to set my speed alarm to an astonishingly low 85 mph because I was past that number early on a few times (won't say how much), and had no idea. It is such a smooth delivery of power that it may seem underwhelming until you realize your speed. Then, BRAKES!!!!

When I bought the S6, the other two cars I was deciding between was the CTS-V and the Hellcat. Although it was a hard decision, the all wheel drive made the most sense for me living in the Chicago area. The interior in the S6 was superior (IMO) to that of the other two cars and have wanted an S6 for some time. Think I am getting about 19-20 MPG and primarily drive stop and go and like to drive somewhat aggressively. Get the tune, you will not regret it!!

Yeah I came from a Jeep SRT. It was supercharged by the way with around 600 hp. To say the least my S6 will blow it away. However I am seriously considering one of the new Zl1s as my summer/track car.

I have owned american muscle in the past....Jeep SRT8, Camaro and a couple others.

My car is not tuned and I did not make the move directly from american muscle so that is my caveat.

MPG- I live in Atlanta and am constantly in traffic. Around town I see 16-19 depending on how much I am in the throttle. I recently took a 4 hour road trip with 4 people in it and a loaded trunk and we averaged 25.2 mpg. I assume that would get me the 28 that is advertised without all the weight and passengers.

The only thing I can foresee you missing is driving a smaller car. The S6 is a different ride aimed at being a luxury car with some sports handling and gobs of acceleration. I would never characterize it as a sports car though.

Alternatively, If I was commuting that many miles and wanted a sports car with AWD, I might also consider the new B9 S4. You will probably get better gas mileage and great performance. You may even be able to tune it to a pretty high level. Just a consideration.

I came from a bolton V1 CTS-V really for the winter ability living north of toronto and being able to mat the throttle without eating up th epilot supersports LOL

I'm coming from a gen 2 cts-v and also have a c7 vette (and previously a c6). The Audi is night and day different and better imo. The interior is on another level as is the build quality. I don't even get in my c7 vette after spending time in my s7. I got a tune and now it's the best of both worlds. Will walk the c7 and is comfy and gets good mileage. Pull the trigger get a tune and enjoy life! I have to admit that I'm considering sways and an awe exhaust. That to me will perfect the package. Love the awd in the rain,cold and snow!

I came out of a 2012 CTS-V Sedan. You will miss rear wheel drive launches lighting up your tires! But that's about it. It's really two different cars. The Audi is a civilized touring sedan that is the ultimate stealth rocket ship. Mine is rock stock and still launches like being shot out of a cannon. It's almost too civilized at times. I use it as a daily driver and the past year drove @22 k miles and averaged 20 mpg. My V was in a gas station every day averaging @14 mpg with a real small tank.

The S6 is going to feel way larger than your ZL1. Don't forget you got two extra doors and a trunk that fits stuff! I'm amazed by this cars capabilities as I've had my 14 S6 a year now getting it as a CPO car with 4K miles on it. I don't think you'll be upset with the decision. I'm trying to figure what to get next....maybe another S6, S8 or maybe the new CTS-V. I have at least another year to make that decision.

Truth. Looked at an MB GLC AMG43 yesterday - lots of different finishes in the cabin, very busy design theme overall, and plenty of cheap-looking and -feeling surfaces to be found, even in a $60K performance SUV. It's not bad per se, but for quality, our Q5's interior has it beat. Also looked at a Volvo XC90 - now THAT interior is the only one I've seen recently that is in Audi's league - very nice.

Your mileage isn't going to improve to much if at all in our traffic. ACC will make it a lot more bearable. East side creep and beep is a bit less intense but still pretty comparable. The moment I get out of stop and go, though, I start to kiss 20 mpg around town

I've never used my GT500 as a daily driver, but I had it before my S7. Thankfully, I get to keep both of them. The S6/S7 cars are deceptively quick even in stock form for a ~4500 lb vehicle. The air suspension makes the ride so much nicer, but is not as stiff as you would like even when in dynamic. The three things I think you will miss are the instant torque of a supercharger, the growl of an american v8, and being able to kick the rear end out anytime you want. I would say the Audi wins in almost every other category. That said, I will be keeping my Shelby for the foreseeable future.

I do expect to pick up an S or RS CPO in a year or two. Just going to keep eyes out for the right car.

I have a ~600hp Camaro SS with TVS1900 supercharger on it. Two completely different cars. I cant imagine daily driving my Camaro. Forget the fuel economy. If you wan to put your foot into it at any speed under 80mph you are going to break traction... forget it if it is damp out. The muscle cars are stupid fun... really... STUPID kind of fun, hehe. The Audis have traction forever. I can get a better ET in my S5 that has ~450hp than my SS that has around 600hp.

In all seriousness, it's a great DD that will check most of the boxes for a "sporty" car fan. It has decent handling for a big sedan and excellent straight line performance, especially with a tune. My biggest problem with my S6 is that I catch my self doing triple digits most of the time when passing someone on the highway. The pickup is so smooth and effortless that it's easy to lose the sense of acceleration.

well said! The other day I get stuck between an 18 wheeler to my left, minivan in front, and grandma to my right during a light drizzle. Not a comfortable situation with spray all over the place. I had no qualms about pounding the go-pedal and in an instant I was out of danger. Quattro testimonial if there ever was one. Rear drive muscle would have difficulty with that maneuver in the rain.
