    Rpm fluctuation in 2.0t

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been having a strange issue for a while now where the RPMs will fluctuate up and down about 300 rpms whenever partial throttle is applied or at idle when the car is cold.

When the car has been warm for a long while (road trip) the car doesn't exhibit this behavior
When full throttle, the car pulls normally.

    Anybody else experienced this?

Same here. I have the tiptronic transmission and this happens to my car when it's cold outside. I think I read somewhere previously that it's the torque converter and that it's not uncommon. It goes away when the car warms up so it doesn't bother me. I don't think it's indicative of a serious problem.

Lots of threads on this if you search rpm fluctuation.

This one covers most of it.

Yes your torque converter is bad, no it probably won't get worse, about $1500-$1800 to fix, yes this sucks.

I should clarify. When I said "I don't think it's indicative of a serious problem" that shouldn't be taken as gospel. Other people here can make a more qualified judgement about it than I, so I'll let someone else chime in.

It doesn't seem to get worse and people have driven many miles with the problem. It drove me up the wall and made me hate the car so I got it fixed.

My old b7 did this when I bought it with around 70k on it. I fixed it by trading it in on a manual.

Pretty sure it was the torque converter though. I would at the very least flush the trans fluid and replace the filter.

Had this problem for 2 years, also makes a harsh rattle sound. I've done a mass amount of research to the cause and it seems like this is caused by the torque converter. This is about a $4000 repair, people who have gotten the repair have said the noise comes back after 30k additional miles on the new torque converter.

is this from experience? does it really fix the problem?

i have the same issue only when the engine is cold. once everything is warmed up there are no fluctuations. i never had fluctuations at idle though. just cruising.

some swear by fluid changes. some say it doesn't do anything.

No, but the ecu uses the maf readings to calculate the load.

Did op even say if he had a manual or AT ?

I had this issue when I first bought my car (MT ) fluctuating and rough idle when cold. Changed the PCV and Bingo. Probably one of the easiest fixes I have ever done.

Mine has been doing it for 5 years and almost 60k miles. It's annoying but I just learned to live with it.

Automatic transmission... I suppose I'll learn to live with it at that price. Thanks for all the info!
