    Is this car cursed???

I bought a 2001 Audi A4 back in January of this year. I drove the car home and the next day the hg went bust. No big deal as I have all of these nice parts laying around I was ready to stuff in. I called the dealer and told him what was up and he said no problem, just wait till I get the title and he would work something out, WRONG. This piece of fecal excrement changes his story and says someone else stole his dealer info and sold me the car illegally. After fighting game him and the dmv I finally get the car registered the vermont route, yes I live in West Virginia but the car is legally registered in Vermont. Took me about 9 months to get that fixed.

So now the car is registered in feel ok about fixing the issues and pull the engine. I have a garage pull it and give me the motor and I work on it. I get it totally rebuilt and return the engine to the garage to get her tucked back in. The next day I get a call and the engine is now locked up. Wtf?!?! It rolled over fine when I gave it to them as I set the timing and checked it personally. So I stop in after work and the bolts I bought were for a dual mass clutch has setup and I have a single mass. The guy installed them and hit them with 1/2" air impact, like the ones you take lug nuts off with. He hit it so hard it dented the main cap and that dented the main bearings causing to seize the engine.

Now here I am stuck again with this car. It's an 01 avant and I love it but damn it does not feel like it's meant to be.

Technically I feel this is their fault, yes I supplied the wrong bolts but you do not torque flywheel bolts with a impact.

I would say it's their fault. As you mentioned, they shouldn't install flywheel bolts with an impact.

I work as an aircraft mechanic which is obviously different, however, I feel that it is always up to the mechanic to make sure they are installing the correct parts.

    Good luck with the battle.

You of all people know the value and seriousness of preventative maintenance. Aircraft mechanics are the shit I wish I got my A&P in highschool.

well.. It is their fault. I felt that way about my 00, Every time i fixed a part something went wrong until finally the transmission decided it wanted to be the final nail in the coffin for me on that car, I have 2 others and neither one gave me a run for my money like the 00 did, The 99 and 03 i have Neither one had that many issues nor cost me nearly as much. had a new turbo, Cat, timing belt water pump, coil packs, spark plugs, heater core, serp belts ac, and like 100 other things and NEW exhaust "06 a4 exhausts have the same pathing, Who knew.." all that done and a hole in the transmission line occurred while i was driving home, The car shifted funny, I got out checked Transmission fluid pouring out parked it waited in the rain for a tow truck jacked it onto the truck fixed the line, refilled the fluid, Lost 3rd 4th and 5th gear. some cars just want to fight you, and some just feel right, I would say dont put more than its worth into it.

As for the impact thing, Hell no, Thats their fault 200%, Engines dont like being over torqued and forcing one to turn over like that screws everything and probably crushed the valves tbh, i would def go after them for that, since u were able to freely turn.
who did it so i know who to NOT take my car to.
one of those days... every day.

Remember to change your blinker fluid it may go bad on you!

My personal mechanic uses air tools...but is also a huge enthusiast and a member on here. Even built a sequential b6 A4 with a SC feeding a turbo, VR6 Passat with Quattro swap, and built many other cars including my friend's k04 Allroad. He is no dummy though, and I assume chose air tools with the right tq rating. Never had an issue requiring his services, which is rare. And when I do, he charges me peanuts and sometimes nothing (last time I think I gave him what I had in my pocket, which was like $50). Difference is, he knows I wrench and only call him if necessary or just plain old lazy.

With that being said, shop's fault and not sure what you plan on doing after this. And to throw fuel on the fire...places like Tyrol Sports (Mike is very cool peoples) has the techs use OEM torque specs on everything. And I mean everything. Quality control is important and people go about it different ways. Told you my mechanic has his own tricks, whatever that may be. And Tyrol Sports uses OEM tq specs. Shop you used most likely wasn't expecting that.

Shot in the dark fix: Take engine back, put on stand, order one main cap (I know about the line hone, but...), put back in, plasti gauge 4 times on 90 degree spots on crank journal, and if they all check out then take your chances. Shot in the dark that just may work. Don't really have much to lose...and does not cost much in money and work to get done. I am running a cam cap not original and have had no issues running it for a while now.

Cam caps have no bearing and have .004" clearance. That would not scare me to bad at all.

I had the exact same issue with the 058 block (the machinist lost my main caps) and used ones are no where near close. I have about $5k tied up in the motor not including the 26 hours I spent building it to the "T", literally checked every spec including out of round, taper, and bore diameter. Really stinks but hey what do you do.

The issue really was not him using a impact. He has a nice 3/8 cordless impact but he chose a impact that is rated 810 ft lb of torque. Plus he the bolt was at a full head of steam when it happened.

I found a awm block for $200 shipped so I snagged it. I am hoping all awm blocks are the same.

They are. Good option...but make the shop pay for new parts like main bearings...with free labor. Fair deal in my opinion. All other parts should swap over no problem unless crank end was distorted.
