Car is cranking, but will not start!

Hi! Norwegian fellow here, so I apologize in advance if my english is a little broken

Today my Audi A4 B5 1.8T decided to stop working. The car has not had any major problems untill now, except from having minor RPM fluctuations at idle, and the fuel consumption has gone up in the last couple of weeks.
It worked as usual yesterday, so Im not sure why it suddenly decided to break down.

As of right now it is difficult for me to get it hooked up to a VAG-COM system, but I will do at a later date
Are there any suggestions to where I could start looking myself? This is my first car, and Im a bit of a beginner when it comes to fixing cars. I do however have access to a car lift and a broad collection of tools!

I understand if my explanation is a little vague, but feel free to ask me any further questions

How did you make out with this? Did you scan it and were able to communicate with the ecu?
This happened to my car and is why I got it so cheap, it was not the crank sensor
