    Annoying noise while driving

    I have a 2006 A4 2.0 Quattro Automatic with ~127,500 miles on it.

For the last year or so I've noticed a sound, or more like a buzzing (can feel it in pedals) while driving. It happens at all speeds (gets a little better up at around 80) and in all weather conditions and road surfaces. It completely goes away when turning the wheel left through a curve or turn, but as soon as I start to straighten out it comes back.

I replaced the front wheel bearings, brakes and rear brakes, but none of that has helped.

Any ideas what could be causing this? My latest theory was something with the CVs / axles but I'd rather have an idea before I start throwing money at it.

Check the dust shields up front. I have some buzzing and noise but, like you, when I turned a certain way, it went away. Turned out to be dust shield slightly bent and rubbing on either the disc or wheel.

I was going to say wheel bearings but looks like you replaced them.

I'll check them but I believe them to be clear as they were removed during the new bearing install. Thanks!

More than likely it's the front axles. I just replaced mine last weekend. I was getting grinding noise when backing up and turning, and a constant low pitch drone while driving. Now all I hear is the occasional hum from the snow tires and the exhaust. That sweet, sweet rumble of the V8 exhaust. It also took away the slop in the drive-train.

It's been my experience that CV axles last 100k miles. Then, like shocks, they slowly wear out to where you are now. My dad's Maxima had that "Dinah Moe Hum" with 135k. I replaced the axles and it was gone.

If you plan on keeping the car for a couple of years, go with Raxles. They cost alittle more but worth it. Forgot to mention, the S is at 110k,

Wont failing CV joints at the axles will make more of a clicking sound and not a drone/vibration? I used Marty's rebuilds on mine too and have been pleased so far. But the OEMs should go well over 100k unless you are lowered. Or if a boot rips and you don't replace immediately.

Yes. A failing CV will make a clicking noise. However, one that is just worn after 100k+ of use, you are going to get a constant hum/drone.

OP-Have you changed the front diff fluid?

I haven't changed the fluid yet, that was another thing I was looking at. The fluid, and I'm guessing there are bearings in there?

Yes, there are bearings in there. It has to be pumped out, there is no drain plug for the diff. Don't believe them if they tell you it's lifetime fluid. It's bullshit.
