    Higher than average oil temps

    Hi Guys,

A lot of work have been done to my B5 this past year. I recently did a oil change last weekend with Amsoil 0w40 and a high efficiency oil filter. Just this week I've noticed that my oil temps are higher than average. I've owned the car for almost 7 years and I've never seen it hit 225-230 on gauge and stay there with no spirited driving and regular around town driving. My usual temps are 200-210 degrees in 35-75 degree days. The oil cooler gasket has been replaced this year along with a new turbo with supporting hardware. Do you think my oil cooler is going out? Or is the sensor is?

I've always used 0w40 for winter time and it would run cooler because of the outside temps. Seeing hotter temps and not seeing the gauge go down a tick (210*) after idling for 3-5min got me a bit concerned.

    Nathan

probably a bad sensor. I had a bad one and it would read almost 300 in just a few minutes of driving and its damn near impossible for the oil to heat up that quick

I'm praying it's a bad sensor. I could use a laser heat range gun at work and point it to the cooler. Is the level sensor attached to the oil pan the same as temp sensor? Dual function?

Yes it is a dual sensor on AWM. Taking the cooler temp will be largely useless since you will be mostly reading the coolant temp

Right. I would have to point it at the hoses attaching to the cooler right.

No, that's coolant too. You would have to point it at the oil filter

Ok I see. I will update thread accordingly. First I have to find the laser gun, then see if I'm readings match the gauge. Thanks for the help.

Cold start and it's not even on the 150 mark. Is this a sign?

Could be the gauge itself. Try tapping the clear plastic covering it

Well this what happened. I drove to the gas station and the gauge somehow reset itself. The needle went straight on the 150 tick and then warmed up to the usual 200 tick mark then stayed around 210. When I drove to work it was hovering at 215-220 mark. I just think this sensor is going out and eventually needs to be replaced.
