Rear Suspension - thuds over bumps

    Hello all.

I have a 2000 S4 and over the last 2 days I have noticed a significant thudding noise from my right rear suspension.

I took off the rear wheel and checked all the suspension components which were tight and didn't show red flags. I move the suspension with my jack up and down to check the shock and spring and it appears the shock has side to side movement... when I push it with my finger through the spring....more than I would think it could or should have.

Prior owner specified Vogtland coilovers, but they do NOT look like they are. I have a red spring and black shock mounts... I think they are RACELAND coilovers which come up when you search vogtland in google.

My question is... does anyone know if the shock is replaceable?

Or am I looking at buying another set?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Yes they are racelands. Probably the shock is blown out. Not sure if side to side is normal?

Are there any indicators on a vogtland or raceland that would prove what I have other than spring color?

    I'm figuring that too.

Do you know or anyone else know if they have a built in shock? Or if I can just buy an OEM and fit it with the coilover.

I'm not familiar with this setup as you can tell.

I'm not sure? Call raceland... iirc the spring and strut are separate on the rear of the s4.

Ok so... after looking at suspension schematics I determined the shock bolt has sheared off... that beating said I confirmed by checking the schematic and finding a hole where a nut and bolt should be located...

$5 in parts at Audi arrives on Thursday and I should be all set.

Rear Suspension - thuds over bumps

Well it took about an hour or so to disassemble, determine what happened and reassemble.

The upper shock mount sheared off which I couldn't find the bolt nothing left, but also the shock mount that directly bolts to the shock had come loose as well. Maybe that's why the shock mount bolt sheared on the first place... not sure.

In anycase I confirmed I in fact have voctland coilovers after removing the rear and seeing the sticker... also the springs are in fact purple so that was a nice bonus!

All back together now... now to tackle that leaking steering rack.

    Your not kidding.

This car has some serious surface rust!

I've already cut out some and re sprayed with coating to help stop the spread where I could see on that side.

Atleast it's not on the body!
