    DSG Maintenance Questions

Took my 2010 S4 into my local German auto shop today to have the 75k maintenance done and they wanted 411.00 dollars for it which I thought was very reasonable. This is a shop I have used in the past and they seem to do very good work and are reputable.

Fast forward to when the car was almost complete; the service manager called and said the car would be done this afternoon and that there was no external filter like most of the DSGs they have serviced before. He said he would have to drop the tranny pan to service the internal filter.....

Is the internal filter the main concern here or would the external filter be the concern? It was my understanding that some sort of filter needed to be replaced and if there wasn't an external filter wouldn't the internal filter need to be replaced?

All of the DCTF was replaced but no filter.

I thought I remember reading certain years had both and certain years had one. I may be wrong though.

That would make sense, so would it be one or the other? If so wouldn't one of them still need to replaced even if internal?

Yes it can and should be replaced if the internal is all you have. My dealer won't do the internal under Audi Care and will charge me to have it done at my 35k service.

At 75K Audi Care only changed the fluid, not the internal filter. Several thousand miles later, the Mechatronic unit was replaced under extended warranty. New fluid was used and I asked them to change the internal filter.

Well I thought I had researched the matter of DL501 oil filters but maybe not. An 'internal' filter is new to me. As I was aware (based on SSP 990193 and VAG parts drawings) the original 2009/10 gearbox had two oil filters, both external. One is a standard cartridge filter and the other is in the oil pressure line. As stated in that SSP it was always Audi's intention to delete the one in the pressure line which they did at the first revision of the gearbox. Now I also understand that neither of the filters was considered a serviceable item. As we know, in the revised gearboxes the filter is now a serviceable item. I make the assumption (and it is only that), that when the in-line filter was deleted in the redesign, the decision was taken that in order to compensate for the reduced filtering, the remaining filter would need to be changed periodically.

So at 80k miles this should be something that is done correct? Also is 340.00 dollars reasonable for them to just change the fluid in the tranny? With the cost of the oil.

The 2010 only has one filter... the internal one. To get it out, they must take the pan off and then replace the filter and also the gasket... don't reuse the gasket, you'll have leaks. Also, the subframe brace or AK (if you have one) will need to be taken off to do this right. If you didn't change that filter and have 80k on it, in my opinion, you wasted the work. Audi says the internal filter is lifetime (supposedly), but I wouldn't chance it. I change that filter every time the DSG fluid got drained.

340 is an extremely reasonable price to pay for just the fluid change.

I have a 2010 and it only has the internal filter, I did the DSG service myself (Im at 95K miles) and I changed the filter because "lifetime" filter is bullshit, either they say that to be able to exclude it from Audicare, or it isnt filtering shit... I just changed it for the peace of mind. I did replace the gasket too, it is like $50 because it is metal and rubber... I think they found the fault in their logic and added the external to the next revision year. After changing the internal filter I broke it open and looked at it- it really didnt look dirty at all. I will probably not change it again and just do fluid changed every 20K miles or so.

As stated only certain years have a serviceable external filter. If you search, I did a little write up with torque specs and pics when I changed mine...at 45k miles the pan needed to be dropped and cleaned imo. Fwiw, for the price you quoted, they couldn't have used oem fluid.
