    Opinions on tire size.

OK first of all I know there are other threads on tire size but info is so wishy washy on it. 2006 Audi A4 stock ride height currently running stock 17"s with 235/45/17. Recently purchased some 18*8" rims and am trying to find proper tire size I know opinions go back an forth between 235/40/18 and 245/40/18 I don't mind a little bit beefier tire at all as I like a little sidewall and prefer a more cushioned ride. My main worry is the wider tire will rub. Anybody running this setup or have any input?

What is the backspacing on the new wheels? That is what will determine if you rub or not.

Just so you know, either 18" option won't have a sidewall height as high as your 17's in regards to a "cushy" ride (4.16" vs. 3.7 & 3.86"). I personally would just go with 235/40, Audi has chosen that size for various iterations of 18" wheels, I don't think you'll notice much more comfort with 245/40 but then again I've never ran that size tire. That being said, 245/40 will fit no problem, after a quick search I didn't find any "wishy washy" info on that fact.

    Take a look..

I know the sidewall is going to be slimmer than a 45 but I've seen a lot of suggestions for 235/40,245/40 and 245/35 saying that the latter would prevent rubbing but I'd rather not run rubber bands. As far as the wider fitment that's more so just something I thought might look better.

Sounds like you want 245/40, which will fit fine. The 235/40/18 is almost exactly the same overall diameter as the 235/45/17 you are currently running (<2mm bigger). The 245/40 is is roughly 10mm bigger in overall diameter and you'll be 5mm closer to the upright and the fender on either side. Keep that in mind and measure compared to what you have if your still doubting that, which lots of people run, fits.
