My first 3 second cold start rattle

My 04 B6 S4 has 207,000Khm or 128,600 miles. I am accustom to at least a couple of millisecond chain slaps at cold start-up per week for the past 6 months, but today was my first real long chain rattle. I must admit, it freaked me out, totally caught me off-guard. With that said, I have known this day will come and am at peace with what I will be paying to have the guides replaced etc. Although I am expecting not to pay as much as you USA guys, since I live in the Middle east and labor is a lot cheaper here.

My question is, what do I need apart from the obvious parts, which I presume are the following:-

    JHM/OEM Intermediate timing kit
    Mechanical adjuster upper guide rail

Hopefully the car will keep on running for a while, since I am in the middle of a job & home move.

Get your valve guides and seals checked, and your clutch. If it were me, I'd just replace them anyway. Those valve stems have a very small diameter and it doesn't take much wear for them to leak. Are you burning much oil?

Neilpaku, funny that you mention that. I noticed a puff of smoke at start up over the past month that seemed to be new.
She doesnt go through too much oil, maybe 2 quarts every 5000km. Thought i would try to find somewhere to do a compression test and Bore scope.

I had a quick look around for valve guides and only came up with ECS at $10 ea. Anyone knows who else sell them. Thanks

I think Integrated Engineering sell them too, but my shop just sourced them themselves - I don't know what brand they were - but the shop knew all the specs so I let them have at it

    You just missed the sale.

    $8.46/ea @ ECS (limit 7)
    $8.64/ea @ IE

I haven't compared these against the IE components I have. Thought about buying one for comparison.

    I'm using the Viton seals:

IE bronze valve guide dimensions. Same as Techtonucs Tuning (or close enough with my coffee jittered measurement variation).

S4Bennett. Thanks for sharing the links. Definetly cheaper than OEM.
