    B8.5 CTS pully wont fit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Working on a friends car....Stage 2 upgrade on B8.5 S4....350 oF for 60 minutes in a regular oven. 1st try it wouldnt fit. Another 20 minutes in oven, still wont fit. Try #3 20mins later still, no bueno. Shaft is clean. Going to put it in over another 30 minutes and try again. I know using a toaster oven is better option, due 2 it being close to the car, but thats not an option.

    Thoughts???

More heat...as close to the burner as possible. Took me 4 tries with the CTS pulley...had to put it directly under the burner. Go to ~400...and run.

I tried that during my install...while it creates a layer of ice over the shaft....the shaft never gets cold enough to contract. Heat and quickness are the keys...along with great gloves. Once I got it hot enough to go on, the pulley burned my oven mitt and melted my gloves. I hope you have welders gloves to enable you to get from the kitchen to the garage.

I bet by taking it out of the oven, and trying 2 put it on, it not working and putting back in oven probably cools it more than we think so we probably need 2 reheat the full 60 min

400 deg for an hour, no icing or freezing the snout was the magic combo for me.

Took me 4 tries, last one it slid all the way on no problem

Got er on, damn that was a bitch too! Left my friends house (only like a 8 min drive) didn't wanna get into it bec my car wasn't warmed up. I did tip into it a bit and hit 3.5 rpm and it didn't feel any difference lol. Tomorrow I'll warm the car up and see how the bump from stage 1 to stage 2 is :-)

Unless you soak the shaft in liquid nitrogen, you are never going to cool it enough to shrink it at all. Don't waste your time with a can of compressed air.

Kinda surprised no one is heating the pulley up with a torch. Are there issues with warping the pulley or damaging the coating?

Used a torch on mine, 2 minutes. Zero damage. Has been on the car 60k now and still looks new. Not sure why others don't use a torch, you just need to constantly move it around so the flame is not in one spot.

Propane for copper pipes. I had map gas but thought that would be too hot so used propane.

Primarily EPL... because you aren't tied to their hardware.

A few guys have swapped to CTS pulleys while using other tuners in an effort to make more power. That was before the dual pulley era.

CTS makes the smallest SC pulley...and most powerful.

Good to know, I've only went about 20 miles so far after the swap, from my understanding the fuel trims calm down after about 40 to 50 miles or so.

Don't agree. If it were possible an hour in a couple hours in a freezer makes a big difference. Used to install valve guides this way.

I just wrapped a bag of ice cubes around he shaft. don't think it did anything but cant hurt. I tried 4 times with no success with an oven that only went to 350. pulled the pulley out and hit it with a torch for about 15 seconds and it went on like butter. apparently the cts pulley needs a bit more heat. the oven I was using has been used many times before for unitronic and other pulleys. 400 for an hour should work for the cts pulley.

you need to have toaster oven literally next to the car and be quick and it will slide on like butter. If you take 10-20 seconds to put the pulley on, it will not go on.

Bingo. Oven next to car is the way to go. Are people trying to walk from their kitchen to the car or something?

Lol, I think he got it on eventually. $25 is a good investment to install the pulley, and it'll be good for toast and frozen foods later.

I bet seeing that was hilarious.

I bought a toaster oven specifically for this purpose. Now it's in my kitchen

I posted this in another thread but here is my setup:

400f for an hour, slid right on.

@350 it got on about 1/2" then I backed it off.
