Homelink Issues - Anyone else have trouble programming?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I searched and saw one other person with this issue but he somehow resolved it but wasnt sure how lol

this is my first time in the b9 section as I have b8.5 s4 -

I am home for thanksgiving and my mother guy got a b9 A4 and asked me to program the garage door homelink. She was unable to find any of her garage openers so I tried using the learn button with no success. I went to Lowes and got a universal remote and it programmed in 5 seconds and works fine. So trying to use that to program it fails over and over. Of the 20 times I tried, 2 said it worked but even when it said it worked the door does not move. I feel dumb sitting in the driveway doing this for a hour as the door goes up and down thinking I must be doing something wrong. Any tricks?

I am leaving back home tomorrow and would like to get it done for her.

The garage is a liftmaster if that helps at all.

Hi. Have you tried resetting the Homelink as if you're erasing all the codes and starting from scratch? The initial set up requires pressing the first and third buttons to get it into programming mode. You can also find Youtube videos that demonstrate this.

Search Audi Homelink and a few video tutorials should help. Good luck.

You might try the Homelink 800 number. I've found them to be really helpful and knowledgeable.

I had this same issue with my '15 Allroad and my Genie Garage Door Opener at the townhouse... You need to be using a transmitter w/rolling code. When I tried to follow the Learn procedure through the MMI, I could not get the car to accept the transmitter frequency, despite whatever I did and following the directions to the letter.

I noticed the transmitter would only transmit for 5 or so seconds, based on the light going on when I pressed the button, and then shutting off, despite keeping the buttonn depressed.

I ended up ordering a transmitter from Genie with rolling code:

    https://www.365garagedoorparts.net/r...FR5MDQodDQwNKg

Once I used the new transmitter, after getting the base unit to learn the new transmitter, the car accepted the new transmitter within seconds.

Since you have a Liftmaster, you need to purchase one with rolling code:

    https://www.liftmaster.com/for-homes...emote-controls

Review the spec sheets - several listed should be appropriate.

What I was doing wrong was pointing the garage door opener at the garage door motor. In learn mode, point the opener at the car as it has to see the signal being sent in order to copy it.

For programming with the MMI, after you get to the programming menu, you must depress the garage door opener transmitter by the grill, and wait for the system to respond with three parking light flashes. Once that is accomplished, then you program one of the three Homelink buttons.

That was the way it was done on older Audis (my 2013 Q7 & TTS did it that way)- not applicable to the new system in the 2017 A4s & Q7s

    Update:

I called homelink and we could not get it to work but after some time and the girl I was on the phone with consulting with others there we got it.

The way to do it for me was:

Pressed the button and on screen asked if I wanted to program.

    Hit yes

Held remote up toward mirror and homelink button until it said successful (took a few tries to get that far)

It then told me to press the button twice which I did and nothing happened.

It then says press the button on the actual garage door motor and then press the button in the car twice. Here is where I did something different and it worked. I pressed the button on the motor and then when I got back in the car you dont press the button twice, you press and hold it for 3 seconds and then do it again for 3 seconds. After I did this it programmed and worked.

Different instructions than the car gives but I hope this helps some other people.

Reviving this thread with a curious discovery. Picked up my new S4 on Monday and tried to set up Homelink with the Chamberlain opener. After innumerable failed attempts using the first button it finally seemed to be working but the next day it failed to close the door when I left home.

Today I tried it all over again but using button II instead. Following the MMI instructions it went perfectly the first time though and has continued working fine. I can't imagine there is any real difference in these Homeless buttons so this will have to be recorded as a miracle.

This worked perfectly for me. I pressed and held for twice for three seconds and it was telling me to repeat the procedure and I almost did because nothing happened. But then I just went ahead and pressed the button again and the door started to move. Done. Thanks for the tip!

My miracle cure failed - the car forgot how to open the door after a period of initial success. I then executed another mysterious fix. This time I linked my Q5's Homelink to the bay that I was trying to use for the S4. It hooked up rigth away and works fine. Then I switched the S4 to the Q5's old bay and it too is working. I'm to even going to try to speculate why this worked.

Anyone having trouble keeping their Homelink programmed? I know some Q7 owners are having issues, I've seen a few A4 people too. I programmed mine and it drops after about a week. Very weird

yup... i programmed all 3 buttons to the same door and every month - month and a half i'll need to reprogram..super annoying..was told its because our garage door opener changes its own codes every so often for security purposes???

Safe to say, Homelink sucks. 60% of the time it works every time! I had mine programmed no problem, had to get a new garage door opener and now it won't take yet my gate had no "learn" button and programs easily. LAME!
