Question Anyone just simply replace mufflers?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
With so many threads about exhaust notes, etc. and crazy stupid overpriced full systems that offer little to no performance gains, I began to wonder if anyone has simply replaced their stock mufflers with something more aggressive and found good results? I've done this on past cars with good success and was curious.

If so, what did you use, are you happy and please link to any vids.

Lots of people have replaced the center resonators with a resonated xpipe and removed the center muffler with good results

I put an x-pipe where the center resonator was and put magnaflow mufflers on with 3.5inch dual tips welded on. It looks and sounds great, I get compliments on it all the time.

Sean on the forums had the mufflers from his b5 s4 labree sytem made into a system for his b8 and its probably the nicest sounding one ive ever heard imo.

I cut off my oem mufflers and welded in piping with tips. The car was just too damn quiet stock and needed something extra to hear the car during 'spirited driving' for shifting sake. Some people like it. Some hate it. It serves its purpose.

Most feel that if you decide to remove one of the center mufflers/resonators, installing a x pipe is crucial for a decent sound. I have been considering doing it. I can't justify paying for a complete system.

I went with an H-pipe over an X-pipe after a gent with an S5 did it, IIRC. I like it. Has none of the rasp of the X pipe, and no drone at low rpm, 7th gear cruising.

I know quite a few people have cut out the read mufflers and just welded tips on. I don't know of anyone who has just swapped the mufflers though.

Really the best way to find out is to try.

I have borla mufflers out the back. But I also deleted my center res and put a res x pipe in place of the forward baby resonators.... sounds the best for a s4 that I've heard in person.

I'm starting at the tail and working forward as needed. I have new tips and 4 inch race mufflers to replace the rear resonators. If it's not loud enough I'll put in the resonated X pipe too.

I swapped out the stock mufflers for magnaflows. Still tame but definitely deeper and when you get on it, sounds great. Had a friend recently say "your car has some good pipes". It is not obnoxious at all and is probably how it should have sounded stock.

Doesn't anyone use the search feature anymore? (Not referring to the OP)

This thread lists everything people have been trying on the 3.0T S4 and S5 without buying any aftermarket complete system. Even has:

    product descriptions
    part numbers
    coupons
    videos
more sounds than you can imagine!

It should be a sticky though, so it's easy for people to find.

TBH, I don't believe evil35r ever got around to posting a video of his setup in that thread. I think life did its life thing and evil35r probably just got busy, but I'm really interested in hearing his setup. I'm not interested in doing the x-pipe mod, after listening to countless videos, there's just too much rasp. I think the OP may be on the right track, in that the mufflers will enhance the sound more. If I don't find a nice setup, I'll end up getting an AWE.

haven't heard or learned much new yet. I agree the raspy sound isn't what I'm looking for. I also don't like the drone inside from the X-Pipe.

The vibrant mufflers I mentioned previously did not fit, so I went with a magnaflow setup on the spot. Not ideal, but it came out OK.
its tough to see with the shadow, but the tips are almost perfect. i had the AWE track setup before, so i had them cut off the ends and add basic Magnaflow mufflers instead - the drone was just getting too much (for my dog mostly).

for those of you gasping that i cut my AWE Exhaust up, save it. don't care

its actually very quiet, and did a great job of reducing drone, but i will probably go back to have the front/bottle style resonators removed to effectively have non-res downpipes. i'll post videos when that is done

Anybody know if it's possible combine the rear section of a resonated or non-resonated Milltek exhaust (which they appear to sell separately for approx $1000+) with our stock exhaust? Not sure how minimal and/or possible of a job it would be for an exhaust shop?

Our 4x9x14" units are popular upgrades for the rear mufflers, and give you a much deeper tone than stock!

put in the car, search just muflers, and both the chambered and the performance ones have 4x9 oval, and then look at 14" length. not sure after that what is needed (offset/center, etc)

We offer quite a few mufflers in this size with various finishes, offsets and inlet/outlet diameters. To see them all, click the link below, then use the filter tool on the left to show 14"units with 2.25" or 2.5" in/out diameters only.

The Performance Straight-Through Series would be the ones you want. There are numerous members on here using our components for custom setups, but we would have to do some digging to find the videos. You could expect a similar sound to that of our S4 catback system, which uses the same size mufflers (+ resonated X):

Am I missing something on your website, it appears that all of the 'mufflers with tips' have a 2 1/4 inch input rather than 2 1/2 inch?? If you want to use the 4x9x14 mufflers at 2 1/2 inches as rear muffler replacements for an aftermarket exhaust, could we simply buy tips?

Hi, sorry for not specifying; we were referring to our straight-through mufflers without tips. With these units you can choose to have your stock tips re-attached, or purchase a new set of tips.

Is it possible if we call up to buy just the rear mufflers with tips and 2 1/2" input from this S4/S5 magnaflow exhaust kit or not?

EDIT: are they 14862 with a wider input piping diameter? if you have a recommended universal rear muffler with tips for the s4/s5 that would be really helpful

If stay away from the cans with the tips. There are a few variables and having fixed tips could be a pain in the ass. Also you may want a single out and split, some of the dual out may be too far apart and also cause issues to arise.

Hi, at this time you are not able to purchase individual pieces of our catback systems separately.

We would agree with B18 that getting a unit without fixed tips gives your fabricator more flexibility during installation, and easier to dial in tip position. Our recommendation for you would be part #11226 (satin) or 14326 (polished).

It is normal to get some light surface rust in more moist climates, and can be removed easily by lightly scrubbing with a scotchbrite pad. It is very uncommon to see it become more severe than that. If you wish, you can use a rust inhibitor spray or even a light clear coat to prevent it from returning.

    To the OP -
That's exactly what I have just done, replaced rear silencers (mufflers) with some custom fabricated ones, made locally by an exhaust fabrication company.
    I used Jaguar XK8 tips 90mm dia.
I ended up with a nasty drone at 1900 - 2400 RPM, otherwise fine.
When I cut open the OE Silencers, I found out why.
OE have a Helmholtz RESONATOR built in. See attached photo.
The tube highlighted runs from the inlet of the silencer to a closed chamber.
I got round this by adding a pair of 1/4 wave resonators (J - Pipes) 34" long.
