Exclamation Cheap exhaust mod for more bass in exhaust note?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there an easy way to get more bass in the exhaust note with a cheap mod to the oem exhaust?
    This is on a 2013 S5 convertible (3.0T V6)
I don't want an aftermarket system that costs an arm and a leg
What I'd like is a deeper exhaust note, zero drone and zero rasp
Am I dreaming or is this possible?

Can I remove the resonators of the down pipe?
    Remove the central resonantor?
    Remove the mufflers?

I remember on my E92 M3 there as a cheap mod that was done to the rear muffler box that made a huge difference to the exhaust, sounded great
It was replacing a perforated pipe with a solid pipe inside the muffler

    Basically I miss my V8 sound :)

X2 on the X pipe mod. Deff makes the car growl more, may not sound like your V8 M3 but its a darn good cheap mod (300-400) bucks with installation is what it cost me

^^ this looks interesting and I'd love to have a spare stock exhaust to try it out on. Looking forward to seeing if anyone here does or looks into something like this. I may have to look around at some pick and pull bone yards for something to test out.

I'll save you 4 hours of reading and tell you that most people are installing a resonated x pipe in place of the baby resonators in the downpipes and removing the center resonator and straight piping it.

OP- I have been wanting the exact same thing as you, a slightly deeper exhaust note with no drone or rasp. I think the factory S4 exhaust sounds like total ass, especially for a luxury performance car... The first thing I saw was the X-pipe mod- but in every single video I've seen it just seems raspy and kinda annoying to me. I havent heard it in person, so it may be different, but if you are looking for the same thing as me- I dont think the X-pipe is what you want. I was thinking of replacing the center resonator with 2 small straight through resonators, I just need to do some measuring and find ones that will fit. If that doesnt do it I was thinking about just replacing the rear mufflers with something aftermarket. I agree that $2000+ is ridiculous for some mandrel bent pipes and mufflers, plus all of the exhausts I've seen for the S4 have obnoxious giant dual tips

Anyone have any idea how the X-pipe mod would sound on my 2010 4.2 S5? Obviously I already have some of the V8 growl, but a little more would help for sure.

But I do hate the stock exhaust tips. I was looking for a AWE track used not long ago. I don't want to buy a new one for almost $2k as I am thinking about moving to a B8.5 S4 sometime next year.

I miss the sound of my M3 as well, all you had to do was remove the primary cats and replace them with test pipes to get this sound out of my S65 (...and the best part was that it truly was a ZERO drone exhaust, that OEM muffler even when modded did the deed with its Helmholtz chambers).

Our 3.0t's don't sound like it, but with an Magnaflow resonated X-pipe mod + center resonator delete, mine sounds like this:

I ended up simply removing the center resonator before the muffler's and installed two independent bottle resonators. Sounds much deeper, zero rasp and cost me literally $80 here in Boston.

For the love of god, PLEASE!! do not put straight pipes in place of the central resonator Unless you want to sound like a fart trumpet civic! the rasp is ridiculous!

If its any help to the OP, we offer a few different sizes of the X pipe, but part #11386 seems to be the most popular for this mod. It has the correct inlet/outlet diameter to be easily mated to the stock pipe.
