Im the very satisfied only owner of a 2010 audi a4 manual 6. At around 40k miles i replaced the first set of tires with a new set of wheels from oemwheelsplus.com. Now when i got these i was excited finding this steal of a replica for my car. This was before i realized how forged wheels were made. Eventually i learned that these wheels were so bad they would go out of round with the smallest bumps and crack with hefty ones. I ended up getting 3 cracks in a single wheel lol. Normally if you crack the wheel that bad, you blow the tire...whell, the tire didnt even show signs of hitting a bump (i also checked proper inflation regularly to elliminate that possibility). Im not here to pound on their wheels, im really here to to tell you that after having these wheels be out of round and the tires going thin (im just approaching 93k miles) i had a light to medium vibration at the steering wheel and you could see it in the passenger seat with noone in it. I thought once i get oem wheels back and new tires, vibration would go away.
Recently, my brake sensor went off telling me they need replaced, i stuck my head behind the wheel to find they were kinda thin, but i wasnt sure until i took them all the way off. So i decided to get hawk sector 27 and replace the rotors and brakes. I notice the rotor has a lip on the very outer of the rotor where the brake pad does not touch. I would always cut myself on it when cleaning my wheels. When i got the brake off, i was upset to see the brake sensor tripped by cutting a basic power loop when the brake gets too close to the rotor. Well since the rotor had this lip developed on the edge, it broke the sensor prematurely. After tearing them all down i had about 1/3 inch of pad left!
The brakes were squealing a little but i really didnt like that i was replacing something that looked to have almost a full 20k miles (in comparison to my current 93k on the car) in the pad. After getting the new rotors on and driving it i found that the vibration i first spoke about, was reduced by nearly 35%....
So the takeaway from this, i would hope if anyone goes to change their brakes because the sensor, look to see if you have that lip. If you do than its quite premature. Maybe more like 10k miles for you than me if you are an automatic. Lastly, consider the idea that replacing them will probably help increase the smoothness of the ride.
I thought this would be some nice info for anyone looking to replace their brakes for whichever reason.
