HELP! Sound from rear of car - sounds like a train

So it is a really bad chunka chunka chunka that is really bad at 23 to 30, coming from the rear of the car. Continues at all speeds.

It changes with speed. It is still there when the car is moving and I put it in neutral.

Automatic tip-tronic 1.8 quattro, 170,000 miles. 2002 A4 B6. Never wrecked.

What do you think it is? It is getting worse, when the mechanic looked at it before, he looked at all the hubs and bearings and said he did not think that was it.

Anyone had this ailment before?

Rear wheel bearing/s shot. Pitted race. Identify which side is bad, and replace, though my advise is always to replace both on the same axle as a set. So, both rears.

Then enjoy some peace and quiet!

Wheel bearings for sure unless your tires are badly flat spotted.But I would assume you would feel a vibration in the steering wheel.
