Hopefully stupid question...how to drain coolant

So, I am trying to drain my coolant to change out the thermostat. I am turning the little knob on the drain a quarter turn (it was initially pointing down) but nothing is happening. Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the valve?

I've never had success with the drain valve. Mine's stuck pretty tight and I don't want to break it so I just disconnect the bottom hose from the radiator. It's super easy to do. Just use a screwdriver to lift the metal wire clip, wiggle and pull it off.

I have tried pulling as well. Had pliers on it pulling out as hard as I could as I turned it. It turns freely but does not pull out.

I had tried it with valve, but no success as the place it very tight. I just removed the radiator hose.

I ended up pulling the hose off as well, did not care to break that valve and have to replace it. Thanks!
