    Buying car that overheated?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not really sure how to word the title, but I may be looking to purchase a 2010 S4. However when looking at the service records, it looks like the water pump failed before it was replaced under the recall and the notes say the "customer stated the car overheated while driving and was towed in" This was in November 2010 at 9k miles. The car is now at ~65k.

My question is, should this be anything to worry about? Assuming the driver wasnt paying attention / didnt know, would the car allow itself to stay running long enough to cause internal damage? Again this is assuming it was NOT caught a tick or two above normal on the temp gauge, and that was called "overheated".

    TIA!

If you're concerned, do a compression test.

Head-warpage or head gaskets would be my main concern.

2nd this. Overheating is pretty common if the wp or thermostat fails on these cars. The car gives a message on the dash saying to pull over. Have not heard of anyone completely ignoring this message and taking the car beyond point.

Agree with this also. You have to question what the customer considers "overheated." IMHO, if it was a bad scenario the car would have shown signs by now.

I personally wouldn't have any concerns.

Car won't be drivable after overheated, so I doubt any damage would've been done.

After the car over heated on the service record. I am assuming that both the thermostat and waterpump got changed out since it was still under warranty.
You can verify with the service record. The fact that it was towed is also a good sign.

Thank you all for thoughts. I was thinking the same thing, if something were to fail because of it, it would have by now. The water pump was replaced at that time and then at the next maintenance interval of 15k the thermostat was replaced under the recall/TSB.

Agree that you shouldn't worry about it, but definitely use it for negotiating leverage.

And if it has Panda interior, disregard any abuse it has had in it's past life, and buy it immediately, because it's a keeper,

if you think there might be a risk
    why take a chance?
I mean there is no shortage of S4s for sale
do what I do, widen your search radius and fly out to get it and drive it back
I usually end up paying $150ish for a one way flight
and the road trip back is a great time to get familiar with the car
just make sure to take a nice USB drive with music on it for the way back :)

    I live in Virginia
and I have bought cars from PA, NY, MA, WV, SC, and NY again :)

My 2010 overheated when the WP took a dump. Never had an issue afterwards. I would not worry.
