    Replacing oil pump.... should I?

This spring I am going to tackle a very large list of replacement items for my car. I am going to be pulling the motor and will 100% be doing an oil pickup tube. I have not had a history of oil pressure issues and the car runs perfect as is.

My question is this. I am at 175k right now and plan on pushing the car as long as I can go... maybe even into the 300k territory. I have no intentions of doing a crazy engine build down the road, so I won't be doing rods or anything else that would require me to pull the oil pan, and I really don't want to do it twice. Should I replace my oil pump, and the little chain tensioner for it "while I am in there", or do these oil pumps really never need to be replaced?

absolutely, it's the only potential wear/failure item down there, and an extra ~$200 or so now will save you thousands later.

The oil pump will eventualy wear out. Mine did at 237k miles which starved the engine causing the valves to stick, wear down the cam lobes, and loose compression in 2 cylinders. I would say the oil pump is good for about 200k miles assuming proper maintenance is maintained (oil change every 5k miles w/ 100% synthetic oil). Might as well do the chain tensioner at the same time.

Is there a special procedure to prime the new pump? I did one on my jeep and had to use a tool to spin the pump without the engine on to prevent moving all of the engine components without lubrication.
