New guy from NJ with some questions

Hey guys, going to pick up a 09 A4 quattro premium this week and just had some questions and concerns. Buddy of mine is an audi tech down in LA and told me about this piston ring recall. Apparently engines were ringed wrong and audi is replacing engines if they exceed a certain amount of oil consumption. Just wanted to get an idea how widespread this problem is, car has 89k on it, should I be expecting to bitch audi out over this soon if i buy it? Also, likely down the road I plan on throwing some small mods at the car, APR stage 1 tune, intake, downpipe, IC. Do these mods exacerbate the problem? Looking forward to being part of the community, ill post some pics of the car if everything goes well at the dealer.

With high miles like that. First thing you should do is take it down to a dealer and have them pull service records to see if it had stage 1 and 2. If they haven't or only did stage 1 then tell them u want the test redone. Might have to contact AOA to make a case with high miles like that

Look for a blackened tailpipe. My 2010 had the "chrome exhaust tips" but they didn't look chrome for long.

You will want to check to see if the timing chain tensioner has been replaced as well. If it hasn't, expect to pay ~1000-1300 to have it upgraded unless you can get Audi to take care of it during stg 2 oil consumption. If it fails because you have an old model tensioner, expect to pretty much replace the engine...which is expensive.

Is audi covering it? Not that difficult for me to replace myself but if I can have it done with me spending money thats always the best route.

So wound up getting it! Car was whisper quiet on a cold startup around the timing chain, and no smoke at all. Had some minor cosmetic issues from wear and tear but the dealer was good with maintenance and they did a whole lot to it before I bought it. Couldnt get any records on whether or not the tensioner had been replaced or not because this was a chrysler dealer. Couldn't go for the 2011 model either because frankly, it was hard to get into the loan due to my financial situation while full time in college. Car drove great though. Couple things I am curious about though, on a hard acceleration the car shudders, this is my first time with AWD, is this normal? Not sure if it has summer tires in this cold weather (its 40 something degrees) and that could be the issue. Gotta take it back for a TPMS sensor and wheel balance when the tags come in.

Clean pickup! Huge fan of the ibis white audis
I would go down to your nearest Audi dealer asap though. If it ever had the oil test done or tesioner it would've went through a Audi or Audi authorized dealer for it so there should be some record in the system

If not I'd start with getting that done as around 90-100k is when most timing chains snapped and that will cost you just as much as the car to fix

Then I'd jump on a deal to get some bi xenons and harness to ditch those halogens

Yeh absolutely, I ordered the stuff for a rear diff service as im sure its probably never been done. Ill be taking it in for a fuel filter and trans service real soon, and then ill probably get a quote for the timing chain tensioner around that time. Dealer did over 1600 dollars worth of their own work before I walked out the door so that saved me alot of time and trouble. I do want to get rid of those halogens, didnt realize they were swappable, is there a write up on that?

So one of the things i noticed during a trip to the drive through this morning is a bit of noise, dont know if its anything to worry about, seems to be louder around the turbo but its hard to say. This is the label on the top cover of the engine as well. Not sure if the yellow dot indicates any sort of service being done, on GM cars usually they indicate a recall or TSB repair with a colored dot.

    Welcome to the family!!

This might be helpful to see if any recalls are outstanding on your car. Anything on here will likely be fixed for free by Audi.

As for your noisy engine bay... Sounds normal to me, actually exactly mine when it idles. I'm mostly stock, no performance mods, and had my B8 Avant for a year.

Enjoy the new ride. I find it so enjoyable to drive.

Couple things im not used to lol im coming from a 07 grand prix GXP with a 5.3 V8 and a built trans with a shift kit and valve body mods. Not used to the sluggish first gear shift, almost feels like it hangs to me when your light on the throttle. And there is a bit of a shudder when you accelerate moderately, especially at WOT. My buddy who was an audi master tech sounds like the car either needs a valve cleaning or fuel system service. Anyone have any idea on prices for this? Also when the car is cold, it feels as though the tires have flat spots for a few minutes, then it goes away, dont know if thats related to the shudder or not.

So ordered up some stuff to take care of some probably highly neglected maintenance areas.

Set of R8 red top coils
redline 75w90 gear oil for the rear diff
    cabin air filter
can of BG44k fuel system cleaner
3M intake system cleaner kit to try to deal with the carbon build up and see if it helps

Looks like someone snagged ur Audi rings off ur engine cover lol but ur video sounds just like my car those injectors are the loudest of any car I've been around.

The halogens are def swappable u just need a kufdatec adapter and then u need some b8 bi xenon headlights and it's pretty plug n play just like that

Good idea getting on the maintenance. That's the real key. Preventative maintenance will save u thousands

Timing chain replacement with guides will run you about 12-1300 at a nice Indy shop( at least in ca here that's the going rate). But if you get Audi to do the piston rings if they haven't done them then u can get free labor and have them do the timing for 3-400 in parts only
