Hey all-
I've owned this Avant for 14 months now and it has been very good to me thus far(bought at 49K; has 57K now). Nothing major problems to report, except for Oil consump. issues which was corrected by dealer in July '16.
The mods I've done relevant to this present issue are: Tint of all windows in Oct. '15 (done in my presence 1 YEAR AGO); replace both brake light-bulbs with LEDS bulbs after left side bulb failed; green-screen mode enabled for 2G and change splash screen logo and activate battery meter; double chirp when unlock car; reverse camera shows car silhouette of car and installed viemmeo(sp) BT module to ipod cable for streaming music.
Current issues: A few weeks ago while driving in a rain storm, (and traffic moving slowly) I noticed NO sound on my radio, but the MMI was on, BT was connected; no sound from CD or radio. I stopped & RESET system (2x). It came back on after a while, but my sound was different. Went in MMI audio settings and played around with it unitl it sounded normal. All MMI systems worked fine after that 1-time experience. Fast forword to last week and another rain storm (this time overnite with car parked outside). On my morning commute, the screen starts to fade off/on randomly. Will have radio sounds for a few seconds, then silence then black screen. Reset system once, but same black screen and MMI controls on gear-shift area went off also. Back up camera was also blank when i was parking. it was still raining during my trip and I left it parked during the day. Went to the forums and after massive research found lots of info. returned to car in the evening and went to check my amp area: low and behold it was WET beneath the AMP/NAVI unit . the yellow sponge was fairly soaked. Obviously, water entered that area and made it wet. I dried it out with towels and then used a blow-drier to finish up. I then proceeded to pull all the relevant fuse (in the right side of trunk) associated with MMI/NAVI/Sound system and check if any were blown. ALL were in good order. Turned on the system and everything came back on, but NO SOUND AT ALL. Navi/BT/Radio/ Back up cam, all turned ON but NO sounds.
Reset via 3-button method- still NO SOUNDs from speakers. Went to my Audi-indie specialist yesterday and he said my amp is done; scan via OBD gave these fault codes: 0463;0384;0003;0532;0446.
He said mostly likely from water intrusion from something leaking in the sunroof area when it rains heavily. As of today, same issue, everthing powers up but no sounds.
Things to note: I wash the car 2-3 times a month by hand with a self sevice hose; dries it off for thoroughly and NEVER noticed water anywhere beneath the spare wheel or AMP area. When I had the car tinted (over 1 year ago), minimal water was used (more like sprays of mist)so that negates any "tinting could cause amp to blow" (in my case). Also, this issues with radio cut off/black out MMI screen, just started a few weeks ago. I have done drive-thru car washes, driven in worst rain storms and it never malfunctioned in over 14 months of owenership. WHY NOW?!?! Mechanic says sometimes a hose comes loose that drains the water from sunroof area; it becomes brittle and loose. Anyone have this happen via faulty sunroof leaks?
Qs: how did the water get in the boot area to get near the AMP units? How do I have power and can change tracks/stations etc but no sounds? Is the TSB that I read a recall for damaged AMPs and a cover to place over the AMP? what else could I look into to fix this issue?
Mechanic recommend fixing my blown AMP or get new (if price is reasonable). I was hoping to get used Amp from a B8.5 car that has B&O. Any thoughts on if it is cost effective to fix these amps and $$ involved?
I plan to go see my AUDI Rep next week to hear their take on this "sunroof issue". If i have to buy an amp, what is the most upto date compatible Amp I should consider for my '09 A4? Is it worth it to buy that plastic shroud that attach to door area of Amp? I read no aftermarket AMPs will work with the B&O system, if this Correct?
Since I will be repalcing the amp, I may as well upgrade the sub as many have already done
Sorry for the long post and I appreciate all advice!!!
