    Power Steering Noises

Power steering is making a whine when cold. The pump quiets down when the engine starts to warm up. Upon inspection I found a leak going to pump. If I replace this hose would the whine go away? Also what kind of hose this is and where does it go?

Nevermind. I found a exploded diagram on Audi World showing that its going straight to the rack.

My other question still stands...will replacing this hose quiet down the whine. My reservoir is past max. The OEM hose is 270+ dollars which is ridiculous for a hose...sheesh.

I would lean more towards the pump itself being failed than that line being the cause of noise. I say this because mine squeaks pretty distinctly on startup and I'm certain, through the screw driver method, the noise is internal to the pump or the bearing for the pulley on the pump.

This is my worse fear in terms of replacing. It's seems like everything hit the bed at 175k, it was the magic number. On a more positive note, the noise almost goes away after 30min drive. Wouldn't the noise be loud all the time? I heard that air is getting into the system.

A bleed is fairly easy to do. Lift the front end, start the car. Turn the wheel to full lock in one direction for a moment then the other. With the reservoir cap off, if air is in the system, you'll see it surface in the res.

Man I should of did this when I did my oil change. Would this work in theory if I was on a incline? Instead of jacked up in the air?

I'm really not sure. I believe turning the wheel in place is kind of strenuous on the components but I'm unsure if that would actually bleed the air out. I've only seen the procedure described with the front wheels up and free.

Okay thanks for tip! I'm going to save up and redo the whole system since I plan on keeping this car for a long time.

Been looking at prices on ECS, do you guys trust Febi, OE, and Rein? I really want to do this service soon but the OEM prices are way to high. Has anyone reported failures with the other brands? Chime in if you can...
