So the second thermostat on my 2010 went bad about a year ago at around 90K miles. The car almost overheated but I turned the heat to max and it went to operating temp so I was able to make it home. The old one broke into pieces and I fished out as many of the broken plastic pieces as possible. Put the new one in and over the winter in cold temps, the temp needle would never reach operating temp unless I turn off the heater until it reaches it. However, once I turn on the heater again, it would start going back halfway to C. I thought the new thermostat probably went bad and stuck open. Didn't have time to fix it and drove like that for two months or so. At the end of winter, I replaced the thermostat again and everything worked well until yesterday when it was coldest so far this year at 32. Car wouldn't reach operating temp until I turned off heater. Once back on, the needle would fluctuate back and fourth. This only happens in cold weather for some reason. I have the PLM heat exchanger if that makes a difference. Did my 4th thermostat really go bad!? Or could it be the engine coolant sensor?
