    2010 S4 bad supercharger

So after many years and not to many problems my beloved b8s4 has a new noise .
I'm wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of a supercharger going out ? Yesterday at a stoplight I heard a groaning noise at idle .

I asked my friend who is a very good master tech at a dealer and he said he's never seen one go bad . It sure sounds like it . Car has 62,000 miles and is stage 2 APR , roc euro intake and miltek exhaust . It's going in Monday for a proper evaluation. Anybody see this before ? Or heard of one going bad ?

It sounds like a bearing problem. Without being there in person or a stethoscope i couldn't tell you. Sounds like a rough bearing.

    2010 S4 bad supercharger

Ya that's what I thought to , a bearing in the supercharger has gone bad . It's still making normal boost but it sounds horrible . My tech said same thing . He's not sure if it's rebuildable or not as he's never had to price one out before .

I've only heard of a handful of superchargers failing in total- so it's not common.

However the good news (if an internal supercharger bearing is indeed bad), is that used superchargers are priced quite reasonably; even with low-ish mileage.

Wonder how many in that "handful" had been running reduced-diameter pulleys...

So it's confirmed, bad bearing in the charger . 750 for supercharger front assembly and 6 plus hours labor to replace . They have never seen one go bad .

Just a quick update, replaced with a used supercharger with 30k miles for 650.00 f rom LKQ . car is running great. I have the old on on my bench waiting for me to take it apart and see what failed and why. Not sure if methanol had to do with this or not. I talked to eaton , who makes them for audi and they said methanol should not hurt it . smaller pulley would make more sense

Probably just bearing wear. I doubt the meth had anything to do with it.

Here is a tear down of the SC that might help you: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...arger-Teardown

So is that the newer style charger with the front snout ? . My first attempt from lkq was one of theseoff a 14 Q5 and it did not fit. This style decoupler pulley and snout is for the newer style and not to be put on the 2010-13 cars I believe. It is completely different than the one on my 2010 s4. What car did it come off of ?

It's been demonstrated that the supercharger can benefit from some love despite claims to the contrary. If you're at about 75K it's time to start thinking about it. imvhfo.

Can you elaborate on what type of preventative maintenance is recommended for high-mileage supercharger? I'm not doubting you. I just don't know.

My 2012 is right at 78K miles and I'm planning to keep the car. So, I am trying to compile a list of all the maintenance items I should address to keep things running right. Thanks.

ECS tuning sells the oil for the supercharger and my friend who is a tech was saying it's not a bad idea to change the oil once in a while . It seems pretty simple . They have a drain and fill hole .
