I believe they'll work but the ratios are different?

    All Over!

Stealth, you're better of sourcing a complete transmission for your car. It's highly unlikely that anyone would want to pull just the front differential from a healthy tip. It's a lot of labour to remove, too.

Unless the rest of the transmission is junk, you're asking for a lot.

The lowest price I've seen such a 5AT for, is ~$200.
Rather than sell it in a week, people insist on asking too much, $400+, more than people are willing to pay, and it never sells. They sit there for a year.
That's like me making a lemonade stand, and asking $200 per cup.

I heard that one possible point of failure, at least past documented in 3L 5AT, is the pump bushing coming loose. Causing some seal to rip and in turn, dumping a bunch of fluid out the front.

Sometimes you can find a manual for parts, but even that is rare. One possible reason is that whoever worked on it, such as removing it for a clutch job, accidentally dropped it and broke the bellhousing. Which I don't think is easily replaceable on its own like say, a 5AT oil pan.

I wonder what happened to yours.

What if through the help of spare parts catalog and ZF, you find out the PN of yours and what it came in?
    Clicky

So for example what if you find out it was used in certain C5 A6 chassis too. Or Porsche boxster. BMW.
And if you can't find a donor Audi but you can find something else.

    Manual swap?

Thanks for the post Spike, i know exactly what you mean. I have been poking around for an AT cheapest ive seen is 300 so far. I am just trying to avoid doing the work even though more than capable. I can deal with the clunking for now until I find a center diff or trans and diff. Not even sure if the center diff is the issue or not unfortunately
