    Floor jack recommendation?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yes I used the search button, just looking to feel out what people are currently using or what you would recommend.

What floor jack would you recommend for our low profile car? Looking at a 3-ton harbor freight or nappa.

Also tool related, what kind of torque wrench are you using? Looking to expand my tools so I can swap out wheels in the winter/summer. Thanks!

I like the Harbor Freight/Pittsburgh Racing jacks. They come in aluminum and steel; I have the aluminum (2.5 ton?) version and it works great.

I have the same or similar one and the only "issue" I have is it can't jack it high enough to get my 3 ton jack stands under the car. I add a block of wood and it fine.

They offer the jack in a few different heights.

    I use a pair of these Arcan Quick Rise-Low Profile Jacks - http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...5429_200345429 -
with these pinch weld pads - https://www.amazon.com/Single-Medium...R53M71FX0DWWPP - as the jacks provide the lift height (and two provide safe, even lifting, i.e. front lifting and then rear lifting) to use these race ramps - https://www.amazon.com/Race-Ramps-RR.../dp/B003ZAEUE4 - when I want to get all four off the floor.

When I don't need to raise the S4 to that height, or need the wheels off, I use two to four of these aluminum jack stands - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When I bought our S4, I decided to upgrade my floor jack from an aluminum "racing" racing jack I had used on my VWs. It was pretty lightweight, but didn't seem very rugged. I don't recall it's lifting capacity, but I didn't want to chance using it for lifting the S4's weight without using jack stands, even to just change wheel/tires. I ended up buying a DK20Q AC hydraulic floor jack, from Pelican Parts. It's well-made, made in Denmark, and has a 4400lb capacity. The wheels have polyurethane O-rings that make it smooth and quiet to roll around. It's got a low profile minimum height of 3.15" and a lift height of 19.7". AC also has a high lift model with a 29" lift. The only regret I have about this jack is that I store it in my basement and when I need to use it, I have to enlist my wife's help to carry it up the stairs (it's 68lbs of frikken heavy!).

I have the exact same Arcan jack and it works perfectly. Low profile and very robust construction.

Where do you guys put your jack stands after jacking the car up? The exposed part of the pinch weld is pretty small and my jack and jackstands don't both fit under. Do I need to find some extra skinny jack stands or am I missing something?

bump for current recommendations. I have a b8 A4 but didn't see any threads started over there. I live in the city with off city street parking, though there are still cars on either side of me. There is also a slight slope (3-5 degrees) where I park

you've got the 2 ton for a 3,600+ pound car? What's the recommended bump to the 2.5-3-ton at that point? Assuming the 17" max height on the jack stands is JUST ENOUGH to see something and not necessarily work under?

I've been using the Harbor Freight "3 ton Low Profile Steel Heavy Duty Floor Jack with Rapid Pump®" jacks for years. They're low enough to get under my wife's lowered GTI. For the price they're great, and you can get 20-25% off at HF on one item with the online coupon that's always available. Pinch weld pads are recommended as well.

I use this HF low profile, extended reach jack. The extended reach was important for use with my other lowered vehicles. For the money it's a great jack. Just beware that if you need to transport it anywhere it's a heavy beast. Of course there are better low profile jacks out there such as the Arcans, but this one is about one quarter of the price.
