Hi guys. I am trying to install an aux on my B7, but one thing I am not sure about- do I need a software update first? I have a nav system.

Nope. At least I don't think so.

Not sure, but adding AUX should be the same as adding on a non-NAV radio. If you are using an adapter which will be plugged in place of the CD player input(blue plug), then no use of any SW update.
If you are referring the following DIY then, you may have to use VAG-COM.
