Cam Chain Rattle On Start Up (2.0 TFSI)

Hi ya,

When started from cold, my engine makes a loud rattling noise for about 10-12 seconds.

Is this normal and just a loose tensioner until the oil pressure builds or do I have problem?

I've been reading threads for about an hour but can't find any reference to cold start chain noise, just constant noise when warm?

That's not normal! Before i changed the chain and tensioner i had that noise for just a couple of seconds, now is gone! My chain had a big slack compared with the new one when both installed! Also the engine is quieter now, and i'm glad i serviced it.

91k is not high at all but that tensioner is not getting pressure for some reason. If a pad is off you are spewing oil. I'd shut it down until you get that chain and tensioner inspected.

It's also possible that your tensioner is getting oil pressure and functioning normally, except the plastic guide decided to break itself in half (no codes):



I had a lot of noise that went away when the tensioner and chain were replaced.
