HELP! What is this noise? (VIDEOS)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Any idea what this noise is? Gets pretty bad at 100kmh. But goes almost all the way away at like 140. Audible at low speed. But not audible at really low speeds.

Speed dependant. Gets faster and louder. Goes away with right turns. (That's the passenger rear)

NO wheel bearing play with hands on 12 and 6 with wheels off the ground.

    THANKS

Sounds like a bent backing plate rubbing against your rotor or a warped rotor

Check the backing plate and bend it back if needed and/or possibly a loose caliper or missing caliper bolt.

When (how long ago) did it start happening? Getting worse?

    Happened out of nowhere?

the fact that it goes away around turns leads me to think it may be the wheel bearing. Granted I have never heard one that sounded quite like that on a B5, but have heard similar on other platforms:

There doesn't necessarily have to be excessive play in the wheel for them to be considered bad.

Not that there isn't excessive play in the wheel there is literally no play whatsoever. But yes On tight right or long banking right turns. Its un audible or very quiete. Aswell, ive been Researching alot of wheel bearing noises and havnt heard this type of noise..

    Possible CV Shaft?

It's definitely possible to have a completely failed wheel bearing and yet still pass the "shake a wheel" test.

Did you watch the second half of that above video? It sounds very similar to the second video you shared in your first post. That "Driving over a grated bridge" noise.

All the other symptoms you described point to the wheel bearing in my opinion (getting quieter when loaded/turning, consistent with speed not rpm, etc). Could it be something else? CERTAINLY, however if I were a betting man, that is where I would place my money (especially since rear wheel bearing failure on the B5 platform is not uncommon), and since wheel bearings are not expensive or terribly difficult to install, that is where I would start. Either way I hope you find the source and report back to what ends up fixing it

I know I had a similar sound and it was one of the bolts holding the I think wheel bearing or rotor on... it had backed out and was rubbing against the drive shaft ..

    That is absolutely wheel bearing(s).

Wheel bearing play usually shows up in the non-pressed in bearings or one thats are so far gone they are litterally falling apart. There arent very many other things it could be. CV or rotor wear/rust lip. But this would be pretty obvious. I feel its too constant to be CV so that leaves one thing: wheel bearing. Listen to getslideways, he knows his shit.

Also my suggestion. Bearings do not have to have a horizontal moving when they r bad... so there is no play when you move the wheel
