    2005.5 Audi B7 S4 Avant 6spd Timing Chains Done! $23,950

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
2005.5 B7 S4 Avant with a 6 speed manual transmission. 95,900 miles. Asking $23,950. This is one of 1,002 B7 S4 Avants with a manual transmission in the US.

I bought this car from the original owner this spring. A knee injury has prevented me from driving it, so it’s time to sell.

The car was serviced exclusively at Stammler Audi in Boulder. The complete service history is available upon request.

As you may be aware the Achilles heal of the B6/B7 S4 4.2 V8 is a faulty timing system. Replacing the faulty components can run $10k, and if left unchecked, can result in massive engine damage and a ruined engine.

The timing system components on this car were replaced at 93,958 miles with JHM motorsports upgraded kit, which includes stronger adjusters, and factory upgraded parts (http://tinyurl.com/JHMTiming). This kit will not fail again!

A new clutch was installed at this time as well.

The work was done by 3ZERO3 Motorsports, an extremely highly regarded Audi specialist in Denver, and is under warranty until 5/18/19 or 120,958 miles.

The paint is all original, and the car has never been in an accident. Everything is working, no rust, non-smoker, runs and drives wonderfully.

I have the minty original Avus 18” 6 spoke wheels available if you would prefer them to the RS4 reps that are on the car.

There are a couple dings, and minor scrapes, but nothing truly bothersome.

    WAUUL58E75A473320

    Dolphin Grey Metallic Pearl LX7Z

Sunroof, leather Recaro sport seats, 340 hp, Bose, rear sun shade.

    Original purchase price: $54,200.

Cold weather package: heated front and rear seats, headlight washers, ski sack.

Premium package: homelink, power passenger seat, rain sensing wipers.

Technology package: bi-xenon adaptive headlights, auto dimming and power folding mirrors, colored dash display, driver’s seat memory, light sensor with “coming home” function.

I would drive this car anywhere, anytime. I’m happy to help with shipping. Clear Colorado title in hand.

If you didn't have such a high "Boulder" tax on this thing I'd buy it

It's the "Boulder" tax. For some reason people here like to add on an additional 4-6k to vehicles just because they think everyone around Boulder can afford expensive stuff.

For what its worth, there was just a 2008 S4 avant in sprint blue and 6MT and timing chains done that sold for 19k; and another 2008 S4 avant with 78k miles on it that sold for 18k for some general reference

    Another data point:
    http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2006-audi-s4/
    2006
    93k miles
Timing chains, guides, tensioners, clutch and flywheel at 84k

    Hammer price $22,750
    BAT 5% buyers premium $1138
Total price paid by buyer $23,888

The seller's car and price are nearly identical to the car auctioned. Most would argue auction sales are the best market indicator.

Perhaps, but that particular one has the desired carbon fiber trim and NAV included too. Either way OP, nice Avant, GLWS.

It also has been in an accident (twice?) and had paint blended up into the rear quarters. Also a 3 owner car with service records only going back to 2011. I'm not a fan of the RNSE, and prefer the chinese android B7 units for nav. I do have an RSNE unit I can install if it matters to anyone:)

Carbon fiber is nice though, and I appreciate the feedback Jeepster.

Thanks vman for the link that is a very similar car and very recent price info.

I When I was looking for a B7 S4 6M Avant I took $20k to be the going rate (ish) for a car with original timing components. The premium I'm asking is based on that work being done (and the JHM upgrade), the associated warranty, and the all original paint. We love our Audi's here in Colorado, and I think they do price a little higher here as a result.

That being said, I am negotiable on the price and just looking to make a fair deal. My aim is to sell the car in the next 6 months though, not 2 weeks.

GLWS, car looks super clean. Look at those recaros, minimal bolster wear for that mileage!

Colorado tax, Cali tax, my car tax etc; cars worth what you'll sell it for and someone will pay. Not sure why people are giving you a hard time! If you have have time, keeping it high! Sold my b7 s4 Avant for 27500 with 86k. Hold it, someone appreciates the v8 manual awd wagon as much as you do, especially when it's this clean, right colors and options...

I love the S4 avant, but, if I had to choose between the avant and an RS4, it'd be the RS4 all day. Beautiful car but your price is ridiculous

@striddy, did you read the conversation in this thread? Do you know anything about the V8 6MT avant market? The price is pretty on point.

OP, I would suggest putting the Avus wheels back on so it looks more like an S4, and original...or even source the 5 spoke Ronal wheels from the later B7 S4's. GLWS No doubt this thing will bring 20k+

For the Sake of Avant values, I really hope you'll get 2x,xxx for this beast. Being in Boulder also works quite a bit in your favor. GLWS!!!

    Awesome machine

People should really stop comparing low mileage B6 S4s and manual B6/7 Avants to RS4 values

A common theme in these for sale threads is people complaining about asking prices. Post it on BaT, they are wagon crazy at the moment.

Beautiful wagon, I hope you get top dollar.

Other than the common timing chain issue, what else does an owner of such a car have to worry about in the next 5 years or ownership?

I owned one of these, (should have never sold it) but what I dealt with was mostly oil burn and oil leak issues. The solution to the oil burn is to simply keep some oil in the trunk and keep it topped up. The leaks came from various parts of the engine but certainly weren't catastrophic. The only other issue is the stock coil packs can create misfires and leave you a bit stranded. My mechanic recommended switching to the R8 coil packs as they are more durable. Just know that if you have to pay a mechanic to do the work, like I did, it takes a little longer to work on with the 4.2 stuffed in there so your labor costs go up. If this was going to be your second car, I would not hesitate to buy it, given that the timing chains are done.

The revised and improved coil packs (p/n: 077 905 115T) were installed at 61,328. I'm not sure how these compare to the R8 coils.

Absolutely brand new to forum . So my opinion is probably irrelevant. Anyway fell in love with S4 avants in 2010 neighbor in castle pines Co. Had one . Loved it . Kinda forgot about them for a bit . Life !
Started looking again a few months ago. Found a white 07 ,6 speed , 4.2 v8 on bringatrailor.com had 68 k I think. Looked at bluebook values .think they were around 22000?? Anyway I set my limit at $24000 for that car . It sold for $27000. Gavel price .. look it up . Still on site . It was loaded ,lowered I think rs4 rims. Real cool and very rare. Bottom line in my humble opinion is the 06 to 08 ,v8 avant ( wagon ) with a 6 speed manual are bringing decent money regardless of the timing chain and related parts that seem to be the weak point.
Love this car . I would lower it , change the grill ,tint the windows slightly, and since I don't know any better put the same wheel and tire combo that I saw on that white one that just sold on bringatrailor.com. .. cheers all

The car has nearly 100k miles on it and just because mandatory maintenance to keep the engine from blowing was done does not add to the value. These cars are not an investment and people shouldn't price them as such. Don't get me wrong I've owned 4 Audis and I will continue to own them, but people need to realize asking $15,000 over book for a car that old and known as a matainence nightmare is insane. One auction value is no where near big enough of a sample size to justify these insane asking prices. RS4s are cheaper and have less miles, get your head out of the clouds bro, your car is not worth $26000.

So you think kbb.com is an accurate source? Here's what kbb.com says:

Retail price for a 2006 S4 tiptronic sedan is $13143.
    Retail price for a 2006 S4 6MT sedan is also $13143.
Retail price for a 2006 S4 tiptronic wagon is $15253.
    Retail price for a 2006 S4 6MT wagon is also $15253.

Really kbb.com? No premium for the manual transmission? A 6MT avant is worth just $2k more than a tip sedan? Bwahahahaha.

Kbb.com is wrong. Not their fault, there are not enough of these cars trading hands to get an accurate price based on each configuration. In the real world Avants seem to go for 50% more than sedans. 6MT cars seem to go for 50% more than tips. I don’t think a B7 S4 tip sedan is selling for $13k, maybe $10k. An Avant tip, $15k. An Avant 6MT, $20k+.

The extra value of this car is the original paint and the fresh timing chain service (and warranty). When I was looking for a S4 6MT Avant I had accepted I'd be paying $20k (and couldn't find any so cheap). I would have paid an extra $4k for the timing work and the resulting peace of mind (hence the price).

And regarding B7 S4 values in general, the idea that the timing chain problem that plagues the S4 engines does not affect resale value (and therefore book value) is ridiculous. Google 'B7 S4 for sale' and the first page results show a Jalopnik article condemning the S4 as a terrible used car because of the timing chains. You don' think that scares people away? It stifles demand and kills resale value. Without the timing chain issue the B7 S4 would have a much higher book value. In fact I'd argue that part of the reason that the RS4 holds its value better is because the RS4 engine doesn't have the problem. The timing chain service matters. It adds significant value.

And regarding the RS4... Anyone who compares RS4 pricing to 6MT S4 Avant pricing doesn't get wagons. And that's fine. Not many people do. That's why Audi only sold 1000 of these cars, less than they sold of the RS4. And now they don't sell any.

So much hate for us avant lovers.

To justify buying this car you have to “need” a wagon, and a manual transmission, and all the S4 bits. If you can make a sedan, tiptronic, or 2.0t work for you, you will find a lot of competitively priced options out there. Most people do not want or need a 340hp V8 powered…manual...wagon. It’s kind of an absurd configuration really. But a sedan is not workable for a great many people. I'd love to have a RS4 avant, but a RS4 sedan is USELESS to me. It's like me going on a RS4 for sale thread and commenting how you could by a 997 for the same price. If a sedan works for you, great! Buy a RS4, buy a B8 S4, buy a M3, buy a M5, the choices are nearly endless. Show me the wagons! Then of those show me the manual wagons. Then show me the fast manual wagons. The premium for fast manual wagons is outlandish, but it's real. It exists. People are spending the money on the few decent fast manual wagons that remain. Accept it. It may not make sense to you, but I (and I assume the others spending $25k+ on these cars) think the B7 6MT S4 Avant is one of the coolest cars in the world.

Here is a list of all the B7 6MT Avant that have sold on bringatrailer. These are ALL of them, I am not just cherry picking the expensive ones:

    http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2006-audi-s4/ $22750 * 1.05 = $23887
    http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2007-audi-s4-avant/ $26000 * 1.05 = $27300
    http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2006-audi-s4-avant/ $26000 * 1.05 = $27300
    http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2008-audi-s4/ $35250 * 1.05 = $37012

I received a local offer of $22500 last week. So it is worth that at least right?

But...I couldn't sell it. Got cold feet.

So yeah, this car is no longer for sale.

So much hate, I got the same from some people when I listed my nogaro/nogaro b6. I got hit with the book excuse, the chains not done so it's worth no more than 8k one, etc.

Seems like it's usually from people who want the car but can't afford it.

So much love…and hate for the avant prices! gotta pay to play for a wagon with a third pedal and growlthis coming fron a guy who sold his to avant to get in the rs4 game. Love my rs4 but i must admit i STILL do miss the wagon for sure! When the planets align I'll have both in my stable. And true dat bout the rs4 and 997 comparison. Had a 911(993) and love the rs4 more

It's as simple as the law of supply and demand!!! Low supply/high demand means high price and vice versa. Why would you sell your "product" less than the demand price is? I wouldn't. That's stupid. Best believe if Audi made a lot of these the price would've been a lot less. But what do I know...

TylerD, shrug off the haters. The value of the car is what someone is willing to pay. I paid above the KBB value for my B5 S4 avant, and was happy to do so because that was the going rate for them with the 6MT.

Also, as someone who is interested in possibly getting a B7 S4 in the next six months, your car is a very fine example and a top contender on my list.

Edited to add: CO doesn't use road salt, right? I'm looking for a B7 S4 that is rust free.

No mr. Johnson we do not use salt for ice on roads anymore. Have not for years . They use another product called mag chloride. Which is ok however leaves a white residue on a car that's kinda a pain to get off sometimes .
