    Brake Light/Dead Battery

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi Guys, I've searched the Forums and the only brake related topics were locking or soft pedal...

Has anyone had the brake depress just enough to activate the brake lights, leaving them on all night and waking up to a dead battery. I have since jumped and it fired up no problem. I have to physically pull the pedal with my hand to deactivate the brake lights and then if i close the driver side door, the slight bang though out the chassis is enough for the pedal to move down and turn the lights back on...

Has anyone else had this? or heard of this?

Is the spring that pushes the brake pedal back up shot? How would I diagnose it?

    Thanks!

From what I know those switches are a one time install. No adjustment possible.Yes the pin could be reset. But IIRC they can only be installed once and correctly, otherwise they need to be replaced. There is something else that happens on the inside besides the pin being set to the correct point. Also on that note IIRC the brake light switches got updated to the green vw style switches and the brake pedal no longer needs to be depressed just push in and turn.

Not true. If you put the switch in the unlocked position you can pull the plunger all the way up. Then simply install it the same way you would with a new switch. I've done it numerous times.

Edit: For what it's worth I dissected my clutch pedal position switch to see if I could salvage it when it quit working properly. Nothing special inside. Just a set of contacts that engage/disengage depending upon the pin position.

And thanks for the info on the new green style switches! I will look into that if I ever need a new clutch or brake pedal position switch.
