    Custom making headlights

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys so my a4 has the base none led headlights and instead of doing a swap I was thinking about opening them up and doing some customization. So Ill be keeping you guys updated with the project. If you dont agree with me doing this Im probably just going to ignore you and do it anyways. Thank you for those interested in this little project. I will be planning out what I have to buy and prep up for a couple days and determining what exactly I want out of this. So Ill probably go out and buy all the stuff I need this weekend.

This is what the headlights look like now...

I did the same on my wife's B7, I added projectors with angel eyes as DRLs and demon eyes for when someone in front of her is pissing her off

Does opening them up require heating the headlamp assembly until the adhesive weakens?

It does. You have two options - heat gun or oven. Personally, I would use your oven. Will make it easier to pull the lens off, same with reattachment. Plastic won't melt. 200 for 10 mins and you're in.

OP - are those aftermarket bulbs for the DRL? I've read other posts where owners had a difficult time accessing - curious how you changed them out? FTR I have bi-xenon, simply genuine curiosity.

set them on a plank of wood in the oven as wire racks will likely melt the housing. Just throw the plank in after its preheated so no worries of melting anything

Alright guys so I ended up taking most of the weekend into doing this... I got my projector kit from theretrofitsource.com. I ended up getting the Morimoto Mini H1 projector and the Apollo 2.0 full circle projector cover. I had to trim a lot of the projector cover to make it fit but it looks great in my opinion! My only legit mistake was Blacking out the headlights . I dont know what got a hold of me but I figured im blacking out the amber markers inside and I just went tint crazy . Oh well. Ill end up buying some lenses for the headlights and just keep the clear oem look.

The final product looks like it couldve come out like that from factory. I was very happy about it.

First I took all brackets, screws, bulbs off of the assembly. I then put it in the oven for about 7 minutes at 280 degrees.

The part that sucked was trimming the backside of the reflector and mounting the projector in it. So basically the main part of the entire project -___-. But it wasnt difficult.

For each coat of light tinting I wet sanded with 1000 grit sandpaper, let it dry, and put wax and grease remover. After the 3rd coat ( because the coats never came out even) I wet sanded it one more time with 1000 grit sand paper, buffed, and glazed them.

On the plus side, the car is a smaller/harder target for LIDAR speed readings
I wonder how the tint affects the headlight brightness though

would affect the output alot. may not seem like it but you'd notice on a dark road. HIDs will look like halogens. i have factory HID's, and have a very light smoke tint film on mine, and i'd say it does dim the output a bit, nothing major with the light smoke tint but side by side it's noticeable.

Wow, they looked great with just the projector installed. Cheapest I've seen the new lenses are $165 shipped... did you find them for any cheaper?

Perfectly said. Drove it once at night this week and that was it.

Found each side for $130 and jumped on it quick. Planning on switching the lenses as soon as they comes in.

yea i can imagine. i'm planning to take my smoked film off, they look real nice but i plan to re-wrap them anyway and wanted to see my output without them. i got some new morimoto bulbs recently so i was disappointed they werent as bright as i thought, hoping it's the film.

the headlights look great though, love the projector build. i've been lurking some headlight mod groups, i have the factory HIDs, but i kinda want to retrofit some upgraded projector lens on them to get a better distance and cutoff. i've been looking some way to get projectors on the fogs as well and put some HIDs down there, i'm thinking will help on dark unlit roads and with spotting potholes.

Yeah for sure. The kit I bought is morimoto too. Even blacked out I can still see at night but it doesnt do justice to the quality of the morimoto lighting. I bet when you take the film off it will make a noticeable difference.
