    Anyone dynamat their trunk?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I mostly have my rear seats down due to doge, and since installing the downpipes it seems like there's way too much noise.

Anyone dynamat their trunk before? I've never done it, this would be my first time. I'm presuming i just remove as much as I can and then stick the sheets everywhere underneath the spare and shit?

How much of a difference does it really make?

Not tried it on the Q, but have it for the Resto project on my Dad's '70 Nova.
It will quiet noise there. But I imagine there is already noise reducers in our cars.

Yes, I did the entire trunk with raamat a layer of 1/4" CCF on top. After that I said F&^# it and removed every interior panel (including door and headliner) and did the same thing. Just doing the hatch area makes a big difference. For the doors i did the exterior (behind the door card) and interior skin and the inside of the door card.

Lol'ed at the title for some reason

Yes, if done pretty much uniform, it can help a lot.

Well I'm busy the next two weeks then I intend to order and install some dynamat ASAP so I can decide whether or not to keep the downpipes (really wanna keep them but the drone is absurd - had 4 people in the car this weekend though and it sounded great!! no drone at all. so thinking i just need some more deadening)

Sweet! If you don't mind me asking do you have any photos? Just wondering exactly how balls out I have go to to get the drone coming through the hatch area to come down a bit.

Basically, how much do I need to install to make a difference (or rather how many panels do i need to take out of the trunk?)

    TIA!

Just swung by lowe's and he said this stuff won't isolate any noise. I noticed the packaging doesn't say noise on it which prompted me to just say f it and order dynamat. Gonna wait to hear your results if you do go for it, though!!

The lowe's by me just didn't have any noise insulation

Dynamat, Raamat, Fatmat or equivalents add mass to a area which changes the resonant frequency. You then layer over it with CCF (this mitigates some high frequency) or MLV (the only way to go). The combination of the products will make a big difference if installed properly. I am partial to Raamat BXT2 since the price and quality are very very good. Just stay away from ashpalt based mating.

Damnit I didn't understand any of that. I guess I'll order Raamat BXT2 then

And I did the back of the seats too

Maybe it's in my head , but seems quieter . Now it seems like most of the noise is coming between my front and back doors.

I am curious if you will notice a difference with that. Keep us posted. As I stated the butyl mat is stuck to the sheetmetal and changes the resonant frequency of the panel.

About a decibel improvement but that could be within margin of error.
    Wind 13 mph
Tested going 70mph, normal road (not great road ) , oem exhaust , s-flo filter , wheels are 20in, 275 wide conti dws06, 034 mounts installed , oem suspension.
Got an avg of about 90.5-90.6 decibels using an app called SoundMeter ( two runs attached ). Iphone 7plus microphone.
A different app called sound level measured At 83 db.

One decibel might not be much, however consider the road noise difference between 70 miles an hour and 80 miles an hour, to me there's a big difference, according to the sound app that's about 1.5-2 dB right there.

20 minutes to do what i did lol
took away the spare and layered it underneath
    and the panels were easy

the hardest part was lifting that heavy spare so early in the morning without coffee lol
