    Reading Tranny temp w/o VAGCOM?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

My car is ready for it's transmission fluid change out (in fact, i'm a bit late... oops!), and I didn't get AudiCare, so it's up to me!

I've figured out what needs to happen, and I'm about to order my fluid, but I don't know the correct way to read the transmission temp. I have a Carista OBD Dongle, and I'm hoping there is an app that will read it, but I'm not finding it in their app, and don't want to spend money on something until I hear from elsewhere that it will work.

From searching this, as well as the other 4-ring forum, all I've managed to find is a cheap amazon cable that plugs into a laptop to do it, but if I can use what i've got, plus an app, that'd be great. I do *not* have access to Torque at this time, but could if it came down to it.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks!

If you are on iOS, I use EngineLink and 4-Stroke. Both those apps show tranny temps, although I think you will need to make an in-app purchase on 4-stroke to see the tranny temp.

You should be able to do it with the Carista Dongle either with your laptop or phone.

As you said Torque is the big app on android

    Some on laptop: https://www.elmelectronics.com/help/obd/software/

I've never used any of them but I have written programs that read sensors from a bluetooth ODBII dongle so I know it can be done.

it should be PID 0105 and the formula is (A-40)*9/5+32

that should give the reading in F

Use a non-contact Infra-red thermometer pointed at the bottom center of the trans oil pan. It pretty much tracks the temp of the circulating fluid. Put the plug back in when the IR thermometer indicates the lower end of the specified fluid temperature range, as the thermal inertia of the pan lags the actual fluid temp by a bit.

In Torque Pro what metric is it that shows the transmission temp, like what's it called?

i'm not sure how the Fusion layout is for custom PIDs. But there was another thread with the layout in there.

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...8-5-S4-S5-3-0T

But you can try the formula as A-40 to have it read in Celsius and try to find the conversion that works for Fusion for Fahrenheit.

It's still just showing -40. I don't think it knows what A is.

    try this

    Mode/Header = ECM
    OBD Mode = 01
    PID Number = 05
    Equation = A-40

    Maybe that will help?

I doubt a generic OBD parameter reader can access the trans fluid temp from the Audi TCU.

This is what shows up in the torque pro app for me. I'm on Android. Only method 1 actually shows values though.
