My driver's side light exploded followed by the passanger's side 2 months later. Both were replaced under warranty.

I believe the high/low is controlled by a mechanical movement of a flap or shutter that angles the light output more and lets more through. The bulb has one output level. If it's cold where you live and you had some condensation in the headlight housing, it's possible the mechanical portion of this froze in place or something. That's a reach, but something to consider... maybe.

Swank is correct. They use the same bulb and it is a flap the controls high/low.

    My guess would be bulb.

Easiest way to tell is to swap them and see if the other side goes out. This will tell you if it is the ballasts or the bulb. Both are easily serviceable.

Why would it be the bulb? I understood this subject line to mean the flipping from low to high beam not working. If it was just completely out, most people would go after the bulb as the failure and not the ballast as he asked in the OP, HID or not, bulb first and a swap like you said would be a good diag step to take for that. But I think he might have meant the headlight doesn't flip to high beam or he would have said headlight completely out. Who the fuck knows now... lol.

Some clarification would be awesome OP.

I thought high/low beam out meant both are out -> Bulb is out.

If the low beam works but the high does not the little gate is not moving. I'm not sure you can service these without pulling the light apart.

    no one.
I recently came from a B7 avant to a B8 Avant and B8 S4. So i assumed the bumpers needed to be removed for a headlight bulb change.
