Help! Engine Oil Cap Under High Suction

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Don't know anyone local that I could compare my S4 to so I decided to ask the community! When my car is idling and I go to take off the oil cap it is under some pretty strong suction. Then when I go to put the cap back on after about 5 sec, the engine almost shuts off but then gets up and going again. What could be causing this?

I did not know that. Thanks for the advise! But I'm curious as to why not?

I just replaced the PCV and mine sucks down and idles badly once removed... ignore the comments by old guy in that thread, the general consensus is that it is functioning correctly

Cuz it's not the right thing to do. You don't add oil while the engine is running. You don't take the cap off while the engine is running. Some diagnostic routines can involve this, but it's not something you wanna do as standard practice. The cap is designed to stay on while the engine is running and if you wanna check oil or add oil, you do it with the engine off, simple as that. After all, you did state that you don't know anything in the OP, right? I'm just saying... don't do it.

And when you top off the oil, this is the right procedure either... lol

Oh no I wasn't trying to add oil. I wanted to peek into the engine to see how clean, or dirty, it was just out of curiosity and that's when I came across the suction "issue".

Wow interesting that you posted this. Mine was found to be holding about 17 psi. The tech could barely get the oil cap off. I had the pcv replaced which helped this issue (now at 4-5psi). However it did not help my original idle issue. Currently trying to figure out what else is causing this. Do you have idle issues?

Thanks for the reply! I do not have an idle issue. Seems to idle fine.
