Any of you gone from S3 to GTI

I will probably be giving up my S3 soon and am thinking of getting a gti se/perf pack. I am a little hesitant to give up the S3, but I am trying to do the responsible thing and pay off my student loans more aggressively . A couple of my friends have them and seem to be really happy (I have only driven one for about 50 miles and I liked it, although its different than living with a car day to day). Do any of you own a mk7 gti or for those who have made the switch, what do you prefer about each car?

I owned an mk7 GTI for two years. Still have it actually, and for sale haha. I do not think you'd be one bit disappointed. We never were one bit.

They're great cars, but it wouldn't be able to compare to the S3 for me. I like the gti's more in the sense that they hatchbacks.

I kinda do miss my hatch but overall don't second guess going from MK6 GTI> MK6 R>S3

Have you thought about the BMW X1 that car looks so nice and it is just as affordable.

I do as well, and it will grow as I see what I cannot fit in the S3. The GTI was the wheel and tire hauler. But I went mk6/mk6/mk7 so I'm really enjoying the change, and the S3 looks aggressive enough, that I do not miss the look of the hatch.

I have never had a hatch and prefer the look of a sedan, but the gli isnt as nicely finished or as powerful as the gti. @Gamegenie, I work for VWGoA, so it has to be an Audi or VW, although my grandfather had an x1 and I really enjoyed driving it. @Mops, do you have a 6mt or dsg?

I would love to get an a3, as it works out to pretty much the same price. Unfortunately, there are none available right now :/

This is why Audi needs the sportback... I would love to replace my 8P A3 with an S3... but can't do the sedan.

I came from a 2016 SE stage 2 bagged to an S3 and stage 1 s3 vs the gti is like an entire new world. The s3 is the best car I've ever owned.

Why not a Golf R? Same powertrain as the S3 with the benefits of being a hatchback.

I came from a Stage 3 B7 A4 to a MK7 GTI. It is also my first FWD car ever, and I don't regret a minute of it.

Financial advice: Unless the car you are buying is a few years old and a lot cheaper, you will not be saving any money. Your S3 has already taken a big depreciation hit. Just hold onto it, stop doing any mods, and cut back on expensive coffee!

If i was purchasing the car or breaking a lease, this would hold true, however I am an employee of VWGoA. The difference for me would be going from one monthly payment to a cheaper monthly payment. No other costs are associated with switching cars.

That said, I am not sure I want to part with the s3 It is my favorite car that I have ever owned.

Yolo... just ride it out. It'll sort itself in the wash. I remember quitting cigs when I was 26 to justify my A5 haha! But it damn sure covered the increased payment.

I'm curious on this as well. I've leased my S3, and I might even buy it at the end of the lease. However, I've been kicking around leasing a GTI to cut my payment down. Are you considering any other cars?

Only considering a VW or Audi because those are what I can get for corporate cars. GTI does not lease well unfortunately. For the same money, you can probably get into a 3 series or a loaded q50. I think there may be decent deals to be had on a3's right now though.

Unfortunately, I will be saying goodbye to my s3 for now guys. I have loved owning the car for the past several months, but I am getting into a VW GLI. It is a fully loaded white SEL, and given how much cheaper it was than the s3, I couldn't say no. I have my s3 for a few more weeks until everything is finalized. Thank you for all having been so helpful with all the info on this forum. Hopefully, I will be back with another one in late 2017!

The smartest thing you can do, and you are apparently doing it, is to eliminate your debt. Bite the bullet now and in a few years when you have paid off your student loans, you will be back in a nice car and be much happier. I applaud you.

Maybe, but hopefully OP was smart enough to at least buy a 3-4 yr old GTI and not a brand new one.
Would need to look at how much interest is accumulated on the student loan vs the interest and depreciation on the GTI

TBH, you can't go wrong with the GTI. Price and everything else to go with it, I personally love it and recommend it.

I ended up with a GLI (jetta variant), and I did not buy a car at all. As mentioned previously, these are company cars at employee rates.

Today was a bittersweet day. Said goodbye to my s3 to get something more affordable as mentioned previously. Wanted to share some pics of the new ride, which I have been absolutely loving so far! I will be back with another s3 soon I hope. I will certainly miss it.

I lease a 2016s3 and my insurance is insane, i couldn't go to a gti from the s3 I need the AWD. Ill more than likely end up getting a golf r in a few months though. I almost pulled the trigger on it a few weeks ago.
