Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF vs CHF 202

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Both are PAO oils. Im thinking the M1 synthetic ATF has a better additive package but higher viscosity. The CHF 202 is $10 more locally than the M1 ATF. Would you interchange the fluids? Both are very similar.

Isn't CHF 202 a mineral oil based hydraulic fluid for things like power steering?

That would be CHF7.1. It is a mineral base oil. The newer chf 11s and chf202 are interchangeable but not sure what the difference is. The chf202 for sure I know is synthetic, so that makes me wonder maybe I can replace the 202 with something easier to get.

I think you missed my point. Why are you deciding between an ATF and a power steering fluid?

Don't you mean CHF11S? The green one.
    Then CHF202 is silver.
I read in a Pentosin press-release that CHF202 is newer, and is synthetic, less cavitation-prone.
Whereas the old CHF11S prevalent in german cars, is mineral-based.

The OEM PN's that correspond to it are something like G002000 vs. G004000

Dunno if my memory serves correct, I think I read that if switching, one must do a full flush.
As opposed to say, mixing half and half, old 11S with new 202.
I did that, on a B6, during a rack swap (went from Koyo to ZF). I dunno if this is wrong but I also put Magnefine inline P/S filter, new reservoir (maybe cleaning the mesh filter is good enough?) and aftermarket cooler.
On a 3L. And when I drove stock 1.8T's in comparison, the 3L felt heavier. Also had S4 TRE. I never gave it much thought. Just drove it anyway.

I heard that there's a P/S fluid spec, sort of like how VW has 502 00 standard or whatever they are.
And that within it, a certain M1 ATF is listed too.

ATF is often used for power steering applications; I'm looking for any reason not to try using it in my power steering system as a cheaper and more readily available alternative. So far, looking at the sds and viscosity it looks like it could work.

Gotcha. I just run the Pentosin CHF-202. The cost isn't really an issue when you consider the periodicity of power steering fluid changes. IIRC, the fluid capacity of the entire system is less than 2 liters anyway.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF vs CHF 202

Ummmmm our power steering systems don't use ATF... soooo.

I would get that shit out if you put ATF in there

The fluid specd for it is FULL hydraulic fluid, no ATF in it whatsoever. You can read the spec sheet on it

I went with the 202 I believe (which was green I'm pretty sure) it was like $18 at advanced auto whereas the old spec was $25 and had to be ordered

I've had no issues just turkey basting it outta the resovior and putting the new in there, the newest one is backwards compatible but the old is not forwards compatible? Meaning the newest one can be mixed with anything but if your car called for the newer one you can't use the older designation, I believe they switched in 2007

Also when you say silver, do you mean the can? Cause the 202 is silver can, green liquid

Pentosin CHF is available at any OReillys and carquest and probably napa too so I'm not sure what you're talking about "hard to find". As far as cost? It's PS fluid. You need like 1L anyway. It's not expensive.

This is like people bitching about how much g12 coolant costs. Or the Pentofrost version of g-12. For how infrequently you have to replace your coolant, just suck it the fuck up, haha.

Yeah, turkey baste it out, fill, turn car on, turn steering wheel fully each way a few times. Repeat until its a consistent and clear colour. I did mine like 5 times, which was about a quart I think (may be less).

I just disconnected my PS cooler and drained the lines and reservoir. Ditto on the turning lock to lock a few times to bleed the system.

This is not really about sucking up to the cost of the product, which really isn't much more expensive than a quart of ATF. Going back to my initial post, it was a comparison to the oe specified hydrualic oil. ATF is also hydraulic oil, and other car manufacturers specify to use it right out of the user manual. If there is a product out there that has properties better suited for the application then I will definitely pick that product over the chf202. In fact, I have two liters of the stuff sitting in my garage right now and while I could just dump it in, I was wondering if ATF had better properties suited for a P/S system.

Ahh ok. I'm honestly not sure as I've never read anything about it on here. Have you checked out Bob is the Oil Guy? Might have some info there on it as it sounds like there's some possibility of it being compatible. If you do read one way or another please post back too. Always nice to know this stuff.

FWIW, back in the old days (4k, 5k, 80, 90, 200TQ, etc.) anything other than Pentosin caused horrible leaks in the pump and the rack.

Ok, they are NOT "both PAO" oils. ATF or M1 ATF is a fine PS fluid, but isn't miscible with CHF. It will create a non-lubricating emulsion if mixed, and kill your PS system.

If you want a thicker better PSF, fully flush the system to ATF, but don't mix them....it WILL kill the PS system.

ATF is the most common PSF in the auto industry. VAG used Dexron III before CHF, keeping the same exact part numbers after the switch. Now, it's Dex6 that is USED and it is tested as ATF, GM uses it and Chrysler uses ATF+4, with lower friction properties.

ATF swap is good for track or other high temp applications, but it CANNOT BE MIXED.

no, ATF has a slight seal swelling effect. I think you are dealing with an already-leaking system if adding it "causes" leaks"

Neither CHF is "mineral", per se. It's misleading, just ignore it. 202 has a touch more silicone anti-foam as speced by VAG.

fwiw, G-12 is the exact same as Dexcool. Yes, generic Dexcool-compatible is perfectly fine, but I use G-05 out of habit. Dexcool, Dexcool Dexcool, G-12 all the same Organic Acid Tech. Mixing coolants is fine, just keep the old high silicTE hEAVY-dUTY COOLANT OUT OF THERE. It's less common to find HD coolant these days anyway.

Just use Dexcool generic from WalMArt
