2002 Audi A6 avant motor advice

Picked up a 2002 A6 3.0 with 114k miles that was running great then started stalling. Had it delivered to a shop and the timing had jumped. The shop is saying $5100 to replace the motor because they said the botttom end didn't sound good when they pulled it in. I'm only $1500 into this thing including shop cost. What do you guys think is should I get out of it or is it worth my time and money to bring this thing back. Cause at the end of the day it's still only a 3.0.

If I were only $1500 into it, I'd call it a loss and sell for scrap.
Put that $5100 towards something else.

If it's an Avant, 2.7t swap.

If it's a Sedan, part out or sell.

It is an avant and the $5100 was thrown out the window as soon as I heard it. Will a 2.7 swap require a new automatic or will it mate up?

Sorry, missed the "Avant" in the title LOL.

If you were to put a 2.7 in, might as well do the 6MT too... I'm not sure if the 2.7 mates to the 2.8 TIP.

I think you could get that in for around the same price, maybe a little more- if you do some trickery in part acquisition and provide the parts to an Indy Shop.

Most people would say it's crazy, but if you could have a low mileage 2.7 swapped Avant- I'd say that's pretty cool, probably a lot cooler than a lot of cars you could buy for the same money.

If your Avant is white then that shzt would be pretty cleeeean and 1 of a few swapped Avants in the US.

The thing about a 2.7 swap is you almost definitely have to do a trans swap also..otherwise....it's kind of pointless and kind of a bitch.
The 2nd thing about a 2.7 swap is to make it affordable you might as well buy a parts car due to all the parts you'd need, wiring, ECU, shifter stuff, stuff junk etc.

If you're considering fixing the car the most affordable thing to do would be to find a used 3.0 to make it run again. If you do that then the upside is your old engine has a bunch of parts you can use later as things wear out. Also, no question, it's just an engine R&R. NO confusion, and it's not too difficult for anyone who can turn a wrench. You can get a 3.0 for about $750 anywhere.

Im with rollerton on this one. If the shell is clean, everything works except motor, consider finding another engine.

I wonder if a 6spd from a b6 a4 3.0 would work? Or any 6spd for that matter, might as well while the engine is out. Would need whole parts car for that probably though.

Financially a 2.7 swap would not make much sense, but neither does replacing a 3.0 for five geez LOL.
For $5K you can do a lot more to that car than replace the 3.0 with a used one.

I picked up a 2.7 6MT Sport for $1400 just for the 01E and related parts- I made my money back two fold and still have the engine with a lot of other parts leftover.

If I was in that position, I'd probably swap it... I mean what are the options?

    1. Another 3.0 zzzzzzzz (TIP will fail soon enough)
    2. Swap it with a 2.7/ enjoy the car
    3. Sell it for $1K if you're lucky
    4. Part it out and have fun dealing with all the dreamers/ making more than $1K back
    5. Buy another car
    6. Set it on fire
    6. Push it off a cliff
    6. Donate it for the write off

I personally wouldn't even bother with replacing the 3.0, for all that work I'd rather go the extra mile and make it something unique.
Or I'd get a B5 for $1K-$2K and put the change into making it nice.
Oh, and if you have a wife- forget everything I said and buy a Suburu!

2002 Audi A6 avant motor advice

Haha the $5100 was the quote for the shop to rebuild that motor. I found a guy down here willing to do a direct swap for $500 with me finding a motor. It just sucks that I'm only home 2 days a week and I drive out of North Carolina. Such a hassle get back to the terminal drive 100 miles home grab my f350 and car hauler drive 100 miles back and pick the car up. Then haul the sob another 100 miles to the guy doing the swap. When it's all said and done I'll be the sob with 2 cars in North Carolina but I live in Virginia.

Of course I've got a niece that'll be 16 sometime soon so a slow 3.0 might be the ticket
