    My 02 A4 1.8tq tip to stage 3 2.7t 01E project

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had my A4 for just about 3 years now. She currently has about 130k miles. I big turbo'd it last summer with a GT3071R eliminator, running FIC 1100cc injectors and Maestro. I'm putting down 252 to the wheels @23psi. The tip isn't liking the power, so I just got an 01 A6 2.7t 6 speed manual parts car for cheap, for the motor and trans.
The plan is to take all the swap parts off the A6 and get rid of the shell (parts are available for local pickup in or around NH as I don't have paypal). I'm rebuilding the transmission with new synchros, shift collars, new linkages, short shift kit, new seals ect... And swap it in this winter. The plan for the 2.7t is a complete stage 3 tial 770 build. Hone the cylinders to 2.8, new pistons, rods, built 2.8 heads, RS4 intake manifold, tial 770s... This will be my long-term project motor to go crazy on.
I'm thinking (and hoping) that with only 130k on the 1.8t now, it still has plenty of life left in it. I meticulously maintain this car, everything that needs to be fixed or replaced, gets upgraded immediately. That should give me the few years that I'll need to build the 2.7t.
Here are a few pics of my A4, and progress on the motor and trans

It's Goodwood Green. I'm unsure of the code, but I've confirmed with AoA that it's Goodwood Green

Motor and trans are separated, and the motor is almost ready to be set aside so work can begin on the trans. Wiring harness is disconnected and stashed away for safe keeping, intake manifold and fuel rails are off, and everything seems a lot more manageable now

On a side note, here are the S4 Recaro's that are ready to swap in. Got platinum gray ones along with a dye kit to refinish and match them to my tan interior

When my Recaro's were installed in their original home

    Mid dying process

    Ready for install

Glad to see another one in NH. as far as I know there are 3 other stage 3 b6 swaps around that i helped with wiring the other 2 being k24 cars, R&L machine did good work on my block and called me everytime they did something or found something with my block, great turn around and customer service if you need a machine shop

Thanks, I'm pretty excited to be building one of the few. I didn't know of any stage 3 2.7 b6's, especially not around NH. I'll definitely have some questions for you as the build progresses. Thanks for the info about R&L, they're right down the street from me. I work in a machine shop, but we do mainly turbo and firearms work with CNC's so if I can't do the block work myself I'll go to R&L for sure.

Always love the 2.7t swaps. But power could be made on that eliminator, for those interested. Vultures will be out soon .

I'm all about making some good power with my eliminator while I'm building the 2.7 on a stand. Right now I'm octane limited to 23 psi, and the tip is getting tired. I figure it's best to get the 01E in before I do rods and put some meth to her, then I'll really be able to squeeze some power out of it

You need to control the powerband with such a small motor that is hard to duplicate without a manual transmission. But people have done it. Guy from my section had a gt35r with fully built auto transmission. It can be done...but it is easier to manual swap.

I thought about building the auto, but I've been wanting a manual swap since the day I bought this car. This is the first auto that I've had, and I really miss that 3rd pedal. I got a good deal when I bought it, so I settled for the auto. Plus, I can't resist the capability of launch control and no lift shift with Maestro

the plus side to the auto is that is probably has the rear end you need for the swap, just need the 3.0 driveshaft, any reason to take the engine over to 2.8 instead of just honing and sticking with the 2.7 pistons you have? other than that this should be a fun build. I just got my bottom end together not long ago, and finished going through one of the heads this weekend. I'm going to break the engine in with my k04 setup and this tax season my goal is a single bw efr 9180, and playing with the idea of an eaton m90 for bottom end power as I have one sitting at the garage. So if you have any wiring or other questions while this is fresh in my mind don't hesitate to ask. Also I''m only about 45 minutes from R&L if you need a hand.

From what I've read, my rear diff has the correct ratio to match the 01E. I'm thinking of upping a little bit because there's no replacement for displacement. Any little bit of help that I can get to spin up those 770's quicker should be seriously considered IMO.

I checked out your build thread, you've got an awesome project coming together. I'd love to see a twin charged BT setup, that would be an absolute animal with the SC getting rid of lag.
I think it would be a first as well.
My only question as of now is what did you use for axles? I've read that the flanges are different from the tip to 01E, so could I transfer flanges from my A6 axles onto my A4 axles and call it a day? My other question was what you used for a driveshaft, so thank you for answering that for me already. Thanks a lot for your willingness to help out, I'll definitely PM you if I run into any issues that I can't figure out

i have seen people say they have varying success with different axles, the only ones I know work for sure are 3.0 ones, as for the output flanges check the rear end in the a6 it may have the flanges you ned to use b6 axles. very easy to swap just a single bolt. I was thinking twin with a super but thats just a lot more that could break and not enough room, my goal is single BW EFR 9180 fed by a m90. The bw efr turbos are nice, and include the recirculating bov built in with an internal wastegate, awesome looking units and a trusted turbo provider. above all else I want the car to run more than once haha. I have a few spare throttle bodies that im going to play around with using an mcu and two map sensors along with an rpm signal to control is as a bypass valve.

Quick update: tranny rebuild kit has arrived! I have the 2.7t pretty well torn down, bagged & tagged and put into totes for safe keeping. Progress has slowed a bit due to the holidays and other crap, but I'm still gathering tranny swap parts and ironing some final details

Made some progress lately, sorry for the delay. Ran into some issues as I got the 01E torn down.
2nd gear was chipped out and since I plan to use launch control and no lift shifting, a new main shaft was necessary.
In the mean time, stern motor mounts and apikol rear diff mount got installed, and stern trans mounts are set aside until the 01E goes in. I bought motor, trans, snub mount, and diff mounts, along with an ER FMIC, stage 3 240mm clutch and flywheel kit, and stainless clutch line from Mike @ Ringer Racing. Outstanding customer service and competitive pricing, I highly recommend doing business with Mike.
Finally bought and installed 034 RSB endlinks to compliment the 034 adjustable RSB. I got my trim back from oCarbon wrapped in gunmetal carbon fiber.
Also put in a new radiator, plugs, coil pack harness, and N75 valve.
Bilstein PSS9s are on order, and the tranny swap is scheduled for next week!

There is no better customer service than what you will get from Mike@RingerRacing. Top Notch. And you will love the clutch (I do! And I got ERs from him as well).

Any reason for stage 3 vs 4 clutch with the 770s?

Stage 3 clutch for now because I'll be sticking with the BT 1.8 that's in it for a while, the 770 2.7 is my long term goal. I figure the stage 3 clutch will give me plenty of headroom to squeeze some power out of my 3071r elim

Ouch that main shaft is going to be pricey.

After I decided that a new main shaft was absurdly expensive I found a good condition 01E 5MT out of a urS4 for $250 and stole the main shaft out of that

BTW, props for getting PSS9s. They're one of the best coils made for our cars. Probably my favorite mod I ever did.

That handy little "search" feature helped a lot with my decision for the PSS9s. Every thread that I read had positive reviews, and the warranty is second to none. Bilstein knows their stuff. I can't wait to see how they feel with the 034 RSB & endlinks.

ER Competition FMIC full kit is installed, along with a USP lower. Deleted the Helmholtz, SAI, and combi while I was at it. The 3071r elim didn't come with a hole tapped into the cold side for the banjo connection to the N75, so instead of drilling and tapping or rigging up a connection into my FMIC pipes like I did with the eBay kit, I figured out my next best option. I removed a bolt from the cold side which came out of a hole that continued into the charge air outlet (excuse my poor terminology), and searched for a banjo bolt that would fit. After I found out that such a banjo bolt is not available, I measured the bolt that came out of my turbo, accounted for the extra length necessary to accommodate the banjo fitting, bought a bolt of the correct length to fit the existing hole diameter and thread pitch, and made my own banjo bolt. Works like a charm.

I've had some linkage issues since the tranny swap. I think that the wrong linkage got sent to me. I ordered a used shifter bucket and linkage for an 02 A4 3.0 (early 3.0 with 01E 6MT) Something was binding going into 2nd, but it would still go in. After 500 miles it was going into 2nd a lot better... Until something broke in the linkage and I lost R, 1, and 2. 3rd is now where reverse is supposed to be. Onto the trailer it went.

I'm too busy to mess with it right now so I hauled it over to my friends at EFI Express so they can get the linkage sorted out for me. While they've got it I'm having them drop in some rods, hone the cylinders if necessary, rings, and do some head work so I can rev it up a bit higher to take advantage of that 3071r. Possibly a GTX turbine wheel as well if they're available and worth it. I'll then install a meth kit and take it back for some tuning on the dyno.

What happened to PSi Concepts? I was looking at their stainless oil & coolant hose kit because I'm not happy with the lines supplied with my turbo kit. Their site is nonexistent and I can't find anything comparable anywhere. Any ideas?

Haven't had time to install the PSS9's yet. I've got a 17z front BBK, B6 S4 rear brake conversion, and stainless hoses inbound. Undecided on pads yet, and definitely up for suggestions. I've got heavy duty EBC's on my pickup and I love them.

It turns out that the early B6 3.0 linkage needed to be extended by about 2 inches to reach the 01E correctly.
IE rods, Mahle powerpaks, and an AEB head with Ferrea valvetrain are currently in the works

Q: Are you in Milford NH? That driveway pic looks familiar.

Very good, it's a pretty good area. Unfortunately not too many other Audi enthusiasts around

The 2.7 is currently sitting in my garage, torn down and stashed away. That motor build has been put on the back burner.
At only 140k, I decided that I will be better off building up my 1.8t for now, and saving the 2.7 for a later date. The guys over in B5 land inspired me to work with the 3071r that I've got on the 1.8, so I got the 01E installed and built to handle whatever I can throw at it. Within the next few weeks I'll have some pics & dyno graphs of the new hardware.
A year worth of BT lag and the limitations of stock rods finally got to me... so I've got some Mahle powerpaks, IE rods, and an AEB head fully built with Ferrea valvetrain getting installed now.

Any Maestro masters out here? We're tuning in my 1.8t build and maxing out the stock MAP sensor. Eurodyne won't email me back, and I can't find a way to overcome this with a better sensor, and scale accordingly.

252 awhp is a serious number for sure. That 2.7 build on black A4 B6 reminds me of my old B6 swapped 2.7. Should be a fun car when you're done.

Thanks man, I can't wait till it's back on the street. 252 awhp was fun, but it'll be a lot more fun with the new 1.8 setup dialed in.
