My ECM is going out, and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if you can program a used ECM or do you have to get a new ECM? I've heard different stories.

You can attempt to program a used one but short of saying your gambling hoping the program takes and doesnt have issues. Thats what my indie says. Going through this with my beater passat. Tried rewiring my throttle body and possibly may have shorted my ecu.

You can use a used ecu, but only the dealership or an independent shop with the factory scan tool will be able to program it for you.

Make sure the part number on the box matches the one currently in your car.

Really, that's great news. Saves about $1000.
