    Bad Torque Converter Possibile?

Hey everyone, Ive been fighting a knocking noise since purchasing this car. 04 Audi 1.8t Quattro Tiptronic.

I have changed tranny mounts, even the rear differential itself along with the 3 mounts. I still get this knocking noise. Car seems to be a little laggy and rpms seem to fluctuate while the tranny is shifting gears.

In the mean time I've been getting this sudden judder. It happens at total random, while doing 70 on the highway, and even at idle while in drive, and will give a quick thud or bang, or 2 quick thud thuds. It happened about 6 times, tonight being the last time.

I get home and a hear a knocking noise coming from the rear of the engine (firewall side). The knocking goes away if I put it in Neutral. The knocking returns if i put the car back in Drive or Reverse.

Is this a bad torque converter? What gives? Any one experience anything like this? Thanks in advance!

Bad torque converter will usually throw a code. Not sure about the B6, but in the B5 and Allroads I think you'll get a MIL light as well.

It almost sounds like your converter may be loose. I don't know about the B6, but on a B5 S4, there is an access window (or you can remove the starter) to access the 4 bolts that hold the converter to the flex plate.

Perhaps you have some kind of foreign object inside the bell housing that is causing your problems.

Thanks for the reply, no cel but i did scan and i had a cylinder 3 misfire? I've gotten this code before with this car and just cleared it and it didnt come back until now.

I have no "random cylinder misfire" code just the cylinder 3 misfire. I have changed the plugs and coils also a few months back. No sure where to go from here. Ill see if i can find that window to check.
