AWE Exhaust Installed...So far I am not a happy camper

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was really excited to finally have time to install my new AWE exhaust on my 2013 A7. The install went smoothly although it is fairly time-consuming.

    The Good:
    Aesthetically it looks great
Full throttle over 3k revs it sounds FANTASTIC

    The Bad:
LOUD at 2500rpm - One of the aspects I like most about Audi's is how refined they are. With this exhaust, I wanted a better tone but I did not want a "rice-rocket with a huge muffler" sound. The problem really only seems to be around 2500 rpm when the motor is slightly bogged. I am not sure what to do at this point. Initially after the install I had no resonators on the car with the AWE exhaust...that what holy sh!t LOUD. I went next door (friend of mine with a custom exhaust shop) and he put some bigger resonators with packing to try to quiet it down. It helped but it is still way too loud for me. Everyone stops and looks at me (not in a good way) when driving down the street.

    Does anyone have any ideas?
Do the downpipes from AWE help or only make it louder?

I am going to contact AWE today and see what we can do. There might be an AWE exhaust in the classifieds soon...

It looks like the Touring model, some people say that it will quiet down after the initial break-in period of 700-1500 miles.

I am in the same boat. I initially installed just the exhaust with no downpipes and noticed I get a mild drone between 2-3K. I initially didn't mind it that much, but the wife can't stand it, so something has to be done. I just ordered the AWE downpipes and will hopefully have them installed by the end of next week. I will let you know the results.

The sound points change between D and S. In D you get those slow extended waves, and in S it's sharp. I freaked out about how loud it was at the same 2500 rpm when I left the shop. I've had it for a year and it's freaking fantastic. I love it. It's quieter (or I got used to it). I have the touring model, no downpipes.

I'll trade you my Magnaflow Exhaust for your AWE. : ) It's really obnoxious. To bad Audi couldn't designed the C7 with a better sound note. All of the other car manufacturers are doing it these days.

As someone said before, the exhaust quiets down quite a bit after the initial 1000 mile break in period. I was surprised when I installed this exhaust on my S4 (same engine as A6/A7) as well and thought I made a mistake buying it with how loud it was, but it really mellowed out after the break in period.

If you're concerned about drone in the 2500rpm area, then install the AWE resonated downpipes. They refine the sound and there won't be any drone after.

S4s with AWE exhausts are quite common around my area and in the Audi True North Club, so I've heard pretty much every possible combination of touring/track, oem/resonated/unresonated downpipes, and dsg/manual, and touring with resonated downpipes is very refined.

i had the resonated awe on my s4 and it was perfect for a sporty car but imo might be a bit loud for an s7

its a shame that all of their resonated downpipes always rattle after awhile

Saxon, What do you mean the downpipes rattle after a while?

This makes me nervous because I am now considering getting the resonated downpipes to mitigate my sound issues.

X2 for waiting on the break in period, at first I was worried in that range but after a month of driving it quieted down...or I got used to it. It doesn't bother me at all anymore.

Every car I have installed downpipes on has exaggerated the volume NOT made it more quiet. Perhaps the S6 or A6 Downpipes behave differently but I would certainly double check.

The S6 AWE exhaust does not drone on my car at all. I can hear it with windows down or In S mode but when in regular Drive mode cruising down the hwy it is quiet. I guess everyone has a different level of expectations though. Good luck.

Did the downpipes you installed have resonators? After looking on AWE's site it says the downpipes have larger resonators than stock for a "more mellow exhaust sound." I am REALLY hoping that fixes the issue as I love the everything else about the exhaust

On the S4, resonated downpipes quiet it down compared to if you just had the cat back. The PO of my system initially got just the touring cat back but the drone was too much. He bought the resonated downpipes which got rid of the drone.

I actually just met up with another S4 member locally because he has just the touring cat back and has the same complaint. He wanted to hear the res dp difference on my car and he was surprised at how little to no drone there was.

I installed the AWE Quad Touring on my A7 3.0T.

Had no drone issues, and the exhaust settled down to a mellow growl after about 1500 miles.

Drove it in Dynamic most of the time as the exhaust note is very addictive

    A7.

But the sound becomes addictive, and then you want more, so l bought an S7.

No exhaust yet, AWE have just changed their UK distributer, and the £ to $ rate is killing me lol. The Milltek is over $1000 cheaper!

Im going to go the centre box delete route first. Hearing good things about that, at a fraction of the cost (about $350)

I have a clip,of the A7, but it was more to show my rear light upgrade, so no real exhaust music....

I agree with the above. Years ago I installed a non res Milltek exhaust on my B6 S4 and when it first went on I was concerned that it was too loud, particularly on WOT and at low revs.

My experience was that the sound mellowed after the exhaust bedded in a little. You may find the same, so I would recommend giving it a good few hundred miles before making any decisions on next steps.

What exhaust? Awe? Sounds good. So it sounds like with the a6 you get some of those downshift pops and bangs that most people want at least I do. Sounds almost like the s7 when you let off the gas???? Is your auto or manual.

The 3.0T is never going to sound anything like the 4.0T...no matter what exhaust setup you run.

Agreed I know that for sure drive an s7 and was bugging my wife that I NEEDED to trade in my a7 Bc of the TT 4.0 v8.... I told her I couldn't live without it. Hahahh. Took a long time to get it out of my mind but the sound is intoxicatingly addicting. Regret not just getting the S from the beginning ha!

It seems the C8 S6/S7 models may be getting a 6-cylinder. You could wait for those to come out and pick up a lightly used 16'-17' S6/S7 in a few years. I'm looking forward to potentially owning one of the last V8 S6/S7 models

UPDATE - I have been speaking with the folks at AWE and they are confident the resonated downpipes can solve my issues. So far their customer service has been very strong and they are giving me a nice discount on the resonated DP because of how unhappy I am with the current sound. I can imagine how hard it must be for exhaust companies to make a "one size fits all" solution, so I am willing to give the new pipes a fair shot. AWE said it will take about a week to make the Res DP and I will update once I have them on.

I am going to try to film some sound before and after the DP install. I did film the other day while driving but it is so hard to hear the exhaust over an iPhone in the car. I am going to try to film a better video soon.
